Been reading alot about these "which cable is best". I still have to see what I can get here in Belgium, Canare or Mogami, but I still have some questions..

1) for mic cables always use quad cables ?? (I'm talking demostudio here, tight budget, tight recordings :D )

2) soldering ... I wanna know, I wanna learn, but I know having the right equipment is 63,59% of the job.
2a) would a 15W soldering iron do the job?
2b) 60/40 with rosin core ? 50/50 ? 40/60 ? Or doesn't this matter?
2c) heat wrap shrinking thingies ? Do I need to shrink all connections (patch panels, studio snake plates AND cables) or no need to shrink those cables ?

Thank you for wasting any time on my humble person

If you do a search you'll find lots of "how to solder" threads (hell, I've wrote two or three my self). It's very easy. A 30 watt iron (15 watts will have a hard time heating a connector), some rosen core solder and a soldering vice (you can pick one up at you local Rat Shack) and your off to the races.
The Starquad cable is nice for sure ut not nessasary for good results. My studio is wired with Beldon wire and I have NO prolems out of it.
And on shrink tube, I don't use it in the studio but I do on things like instrument cables that I gig with. Personally, I want to be able to re-enter a connector ASAP for trouble shooting purposes and don't want to have to cut off shrink tube in the process.

Eutectic solder is the one recommended by the soldering gurus. It will have a specific ratio (but I can't remember what it is).

Quad cable gives the best RF rejection, but is not necessarily the best sounding cable. So if you don't have a problem with RF, skip the quad.

Dude, I'm here to tell you that soldering and fatties definately go together in a big way. It's like the lighter is always hot.
