Analog tape still in production

I'm going to get my analog tape machine aligned to a specific tape but I don't know which tape to choose. Can you recommend some tapes that are still in production and are of good quality? Something I can buy for years to come. The machine is already aligned for AGFA 468, and I can also get a deal on this tape, but do they still make them?

Thank you,

David

RMGI is making a modern production version of the 468 formula called SM468.

I have a Nagra IV-S.

I have a Nagra IV-S and I had it aligned to LPR35 to increase recording time (1800' per roll vs 1200'). That said, the RMGI 468 sounds great on it as well without changing anything. I can also run 3M 996, with a slight bias adjustment on the top switch.

I prefer the 468, which is readily available, but the differences are pretty slight.

That Nagra is mighty, isn't it? :)

It’s really impossible to predict what will be available at this point even going by what’s still in production. Production on any given tape could end tomorrow. However, seeing as how 468 was more or less the defacto go-to tape for Nagra, I would stick with it. You can still find New-Old-Stock PEM468 from AGFA, SM468 from BASF/EMTEC and buy new SM468 from RMGI. In my experience AGFA, BASF and EMTEC 468 are a bit better QC wise, but RMGI is pretty good. No need for rebiasing for any 468… it’s basically the same since its introduction by AGFA, unless you’re into fine tweaking even between different batches. It’s easy enough to do on your Nagra. Personally I look for NOS 468 from the old manufacturers before looking to RMGI. Another thing is they want too damn much for new tape. Under RMGI, SM468 on 7” plastic reel has more than doubled in price in the last few years. That’s too much.

I've been quite pleased with RMGI SM468, except for the fact that it's hard to find for sale in the USA. Otherwise it's just a brilliant as the old AGFA stuff :)
