Amplifying a vocalist during rehearsals

Hey everybody,

This might be a stupid question, but here goes:

What is the best way to amplify a vocalist during band rehearsals? I mean the guitarist and bass player plug into their amps, the drummer is loud enough anyway! What about the singer? Would you plug the mic into a preamp and then plug that into say a bass or keyboard amp or what?

Plugging into a regular guitar/bass/kbd amp will do in a pinch, which would already have the preamp.

A small P.A. is even better. This usually consist of a mixer, graphic eq (to control feedback), power amp and speaker (monitor).

mic and line levels?

Wouldn't there be an issue taking the microphone output direct into an amp? Doesn't the signal have to get to 'line level' before you can do that?

If you're rehearsing with a band, I'd be surprised if you didn't already have a PA... if so, just rehearse with the vocalist(s) mic(s) running through the PA. If not, start thinking about buying one. They start at around $300 (VERY basic features, low wattage, with small speakers) on up. The small PA's are more for rehearsal, fun and small crowd lecturing than actually playing to audiences with a drummer, electric bassist and electric guitarist.
