I found an ad for an Ampex Nagra VPR-5.
It uses 1" video tape, but has 4 record switches for audio tracks.
Is this usable as a good 4-track?

Those things are rare. As Beck says, it's not suitable for audio work and 196 tapes are very hard to get, but C format is supposed to be excellent for animation work. Early computer animation like 'Breaking The Ice' were recorded on C because the format has perfect frame-advance recording.
