Ampex ATR-700 half track

So I won an ATR-700 that I have not picked up yet. I'm starting this thread as a point for the collective wisdom on them. (searching gives scant results)

Does anybody know where to download manuals? I would rather download than buy. (duh) If you have a manual set and would loan it I would scan it and put it online for others.

Being a Teac inside I would presume that the a-7030 manual would cover most if it except for the balanced in and out. (I think it was the 7030)

The unit I bought has some rust so I'm sure that that my work is cut out for me....it should be fun rebuilding it.

tried to find atr-700 man. - no luck ..
also, I think you need to look for info for teac 7300, not a-7030.

Model number confusion....

Some point the atr-700 at the a-7300 and others to the a-7030 (vintagetx for example). I was hoping to clear that up. Perhaps they have such common roots that they are from both?

yeah, I've seen the reference. You can dig into it and find out the "truth"
I would search 7300 for info if I thought it may help with atr-700 .. but I'm not sure... there maybe a lot of similar parts/designs/blocks what have you in many different teac machines.

Yes, I know most of those but who knows....

Sure is a lack of information on this machine (net wise).

I will most likely make a page documenting my restoration, calibration and operation as well as manuals as I learn and get them.

Is there any interest in getting updates on how the restoration process is going?

I have bought a manual that should show up next week.

There is some rust that is mostly on the chassis so it can be removed without too much problems.

The interest is here. It takes time and energy to put together and publish some info about a project. So, I'd say, do it only if you REALLY feel like doing it.

Here is a before picture. As you can see my work is cut out for me. The rust is limited to some specific areas away from the electronics so I am not too worried. Those parts are out, de-rusted and repainted today. I'm out of board cleaner so it will have to wait a few days for an "after picture".

Right now the deck is mostly apart.

Get the part free and pull off the lose rust with a wire brush. Then coat it with Naval Jelly and let it sit for 15 minutes or so. Rinse with water and do it again as required. Naval Jelly is a gel of phosphoric acid which reacts with the rust.

Once you have all the rust off (especially inthe rust pits) degrease it and paint it. Some folks use epoxy paints but for this a spray enamel should do fine. (For your VW look up POR-15 www.por15.com)

The price was right on the deck with local pickup... and I always wanted one. It should be an interesting project.

cool. i gotta try this one. actually I often need something to clean rust off drums hardware .... I used to use kitchen-grade Comet (so called scratch free) stuff, brushing the crap out of the piece I'm trying to 'restore'...pain in the neck job
