i guess it just prevents other things in the room from rattling or whatever?

It probably does reduce some rumble if the floor resonates with the amp, but most of that is objects themselves resonating with certain pitches (the snares on a snare drum are the classic thing).

The key advantages to me are:

(1) You can hear it better because it points more towards where your head is, so you're more likely to set an appropriate volume; and
(2) It projects over the audiences heads, so even if the volume is as loud as it was before, it affects them less and blends in better with everything
