Ok...im fairly new to music. i've only been playing guitar for 2 1/2 years. i currently own a epiphone les paul style guitar which when played through a nice amp sounds real full and rich. Problem is....at the music shop when i heard it through the large expensive amp i didn't know what sorta amp it was. So now i have a problem with not knowing much about amps. What amps are good "bang for bucks?" If i put a budget of say 1500 on buying a new amp setup....what would you guys recomend i look at buying? Cheers

it depends on what type of sound you want. if i had 1500 bucks to spend on an amp i would probably get a fender super reverb....but i play blues. for over the top metal distortion that may not be the best choice.

I don't know what music you are into, but I really like the Mesa Boogie sound on an Epiphone, particularly the old Dual Rectifier standard.

Also, people will probably disagree with me on this, but the higher end ($1000+) Crate amps are pretty good too, or at least worth a listen.

Are we talking Aussie dollars or US dollars?

Seems like 1500 US can buy you a really serious amp - how much is it in Aussie Dollars?

im looking for a heavy distortion sorta new rock/alternative styles.....ala bands like "default", Metallica (new stuff) creed that sorta thick soudning distortion. i also want the nice warm clean sounds that are custom to gibson/epiphone guitars. i love that warm gibson tone. i was talking in aussie dollars. sorry....that would make it under 1000 US

If it's Metallica your looking four, you'll probably wann go the Mesa route with a solid 4x12 cabinet. Put the head and the cab in a closet, mic it and crank it up. Keep in mind that the neighbors won't be too pleased so don't try this in the weeee hours of the morning.

If you don't want to piss of the neighbors, you could get a Mesa Boogie V-Twin pre-amp. The thing stomps. Just don't trip on it, fall on it, or drop it on yourself because you won't live to tell about it. It's a pretty heft stomp box.

or you could get one of those line6 amps with the pod built in.
