I'm about to build a computer and was wanting to run an AMD 64 Athlon. Is it correct that you have to run a special version of windows?

I don't think so. I just put regular old Windows XP Pro on my AMD Duron machine.

Good Luck!

No you dont.

Im just runnig xphome on mine. there is a 64 bit version of windows in the works though.

You need 64 bit windows to unleash the AMD athlon 64's FULL potential, but you can use it with regular 32 bit windows and its still plenty fast i got a 3400+ and its smoking

I've got an athlon 64 3000+ running winxp home great! There are 64bit OS's out there and in the works, but the 64 bit chips run fine with 32bit operating systems like windows xp just fine.

What is the actual advantage of Windows 64 bit OS. Is it just faster or what?

I also have AMD Athlon64 3000+ and Windows (2000Pro) 32bit works fine for me!

The crunching is happening on twice the data, 64-bits v 32-bits, at a time.

Actually, it's more a matter of the processor being able to address a larger integer, as well as a much larger portion of memory, which may affect performance, but may not. Sometimes 64-bit processing is slower than 32-bit.

Great, Then I'm good to go. How does this system look to you guys -

1x AMD Athlon 64 2800 - $120.00
1x ASUS "K8V SE Deluxe" K8T800 $116.00
2x A-DATA 184 Pin 512MB $99.00
1x SAMSUNG 160GB 7200RPM $83.00
2x ATI RADEON 7000 Video Card, 64MB DDR

Add case, wireless keyboard and mouse and CD/R and DVD/R

Total $663.00 w/ shipping.

Am I missing anything or is this a good system?

Do VIA chipsets no longer suck? I tend to avoid them and recommend nVidia chipsets, but if it works it works.

64 bit is usless if you dont run a 64 bit OS or even the recording program is writen for 32 bit. Its like dual prossesor. It does you no good if the recording program is not writen for dual prosessor. Just hope there is an update for the recording program to us it with 64 bit if you upgrade to a 64 bit OS.

Well, there are all the benchmarks that show the Athlon 64 spanking the Athlon XP. Whether or not you're getting the full advantage of 64-bit processing is irrelevant here - the 64 is just a faster processor.

An Athlon 64 bit is far from useless, even under a standard 32 bit OS. It still does EVERYTHING faster and more efficiently. Personally, it will be quite some time before I switch to a 64 bit windows since the drivers I would need will not be available yet.

Deepwater? why two video cards? and where is the second hard drive? If you can I would do my best to pay a little more and get at least an XP3000+ to have the larger caches.

As far as the VIA chipsets go, they currently offer the best performance specs. All the VIA specific problems seem to have been addressed about 2 years ago. There was a time though when VIA was a little risky for audio. I have been using MSI motherboards now for quite some time. They have all had VIA chipsets and have worked great for me:)

I should have stated that this computer will run a projection system in a church. Thus the two monitor outs.

I will also get another of the same to use as my DAW.

Ahhh. The suggestions I made were for Audio. Also, you should be able to get a single video card for dual monitors. This will utilize less bandwidth and still do the job just fine, if not better. I would personally avoid the Matrox G4xx stuff though. Also you may want to look into Serial ATA drives as well.

Looks good, but be warned.....my friend bought 2 of those motherboards and they both arrived DOA. Single vid card can have multiple outputs. If your running a projection unit look at a better vid card.

Yes video cards with dual outs saves on system resorces. If the radon 7000 is and AGP card there are no motherboards with two AGP slots. I second on that on avoiding maxtor. they are cheaper but fail sooner. You can look into a SATA hard drive. It has a faster tranfer rate. Also the motherboard has to support it or you have to buy an adaptor card.

as a point of reference being a user that goes through about 15 hard drives a year, if not more.... I have had just as many western digital drives crash as I have Maxtor.
