Hi,

First let me say thanks for all the past help! :) Here is what i have:

- mbox2
- matched ADK hamburg (vocals and acoutic guitars)
- SM57 (electric guitar, G&L commanche through a Savage Rohr 15)
- various samson stands
- basic microphone cables (my buddy has them, i am not sure of the brand)

Do I need anything else? I have been seeing a lot fo things about preamps, are the ones on my mbox2 good enough?

thx,
b

Yea, you're missing your head.

It wasn't screwed on tight enough.

.

I see this board is not free of jerks who seem to know it all. I guess you take the good with the bad. Anyone else who would like to give me some help would be greatly appreciated. This is my first time attempting home recording.

regards,
b

Do you have monitors? Not just computer speakers but true monitors?

The preamps in your mbox may get you by, but that is something you will have to test for yourself. If you find the sound lacking in anyway, sure new preamps will help, but to flat out say the mbox won't work may be a stretch. Everybody has to start some where, and I think you have a good beginning.

Sorry, missingMN, apparently no place is totally free of jerks. However, I'll try to keep this thread free of them for you :-)

You'll be fine until you realize you want it to sound better. Learn to use what you have and when you get the best sound you can out of it, and then it doesn't sound (place your buzzword here {warm, full, snarky, deep, round, euphoneous, etc}) enough, you are ready for Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS)
Then you will need eq's and compressors and sdc's and dynamics and ribbons and limiters and de essers and aural exciters and sonic booparameters and other stuff
In the meantime work on placement of the mic and cleaning up the mix with panning, eq, and compression

Wow, Dragon exists!

I would suggest that in addition to monitors for mixing, you would find a pair of headphones handy for tracking.

That's a good start with what you have. Just get down to it and start tracking!

Headphones are a decent way to mix to get started, or any other stereo speakers. Worry about monitors and new pre-amps later.

Best wishes,

Fasten your seat belt; you are just tipping over onto the Slippery Slope. I hope you don't have a wife or girlfriend that's used to you spending money on her! ;^)

Thanks everyone.

OK so I am set, this weekend should be a blast. i am sure it will sound poorly at first but it will be a fun learning experience.

Tighten it up with this.

The pre's on the Mbox will be just fine for what you're doing. They sound very clean and are relatively quiet. They don't have a ton of gain, but it won't be an issue unless you're using the SM57 on quiet sources. I second getting a decent pair of CLOSED BACK headphones for tracking, to keep your monitoring mix from bleeding onto every track you record.
