i found these monitors-

Alesis Monitor 1 Active MK2 Biamp Studio Monitors

-and they seem to be a good deal. i need to get a pair of monitors for recording and mixing, but i cant spend much more than 400 bucks. if anyone has had some experience with these monitors (good, bad, any at all) please let me know what you think about them.

I'm not sure of those but the Yorkville YSM-1p's click here seem to be getting alot of "good bang for the buck" opinions.

May be too late by now, but I was considering buying some alesis monitors until I looked thru these forums. Just do a search for Alesis Monitor and you'll find no shortage of people who hate them. By contrast, I found maybe four posts defending them. For your price range I'd look at Mackies or Events.

people all over this board bash behringer and i like it.....it just depends on whos considered an authority and how many want to be led around by a chain as converts without question. this place isnt the authority on one particular group of whatever....the idea would be to find monitors in your price range and try to figure out what you like, what you dont like, and what you can deal with using a certain monitor brand. when looking for opinions...dont just look here....there are other opinions on store's websites and other boards on the internet. get a consensus

While I personally dont care for behringer gear (or alesis monitors, for that matter!), DistortedRumble's post is pretty much right on....

You hear with your ears, not people's opinions!

Yes, distortedrumble makes good ponts. Don't limit your research of a product to just a few opinions on this board, though there are a few very knowledgable folks who post here.

Anyway, has anyone compared these new M1 active Mk2 to the old M1 actives? Any thoughts on how they differ?

With all due respect to BB and DR...

1) Being a newbie, it's sometimes hard to trust your ears until you are confident that you're hearing what everyone else is. You have to learn any monitors, so why not learn on ones that are considered acceptable by those who should know. Think of it in terms of microphones. How many newbies that have never experienced any condensor mic have been thouroughly impressed with the likes of an NT-1 , C-1000, or any cheap MXL or Nady, etc. Then, after they gain more experience, they begin to realize how harsh is is in comparison, and quickly outgrow it. That's not something you want to do with monitors, as then you will have to 'unlearn' them.

2) Yes, it's about what you like, not what someone else tells you that you should like, but, back to the mic analogy, while you may want to buy a vocal mic based on how it makes your voice sound, that's not how you want to select monitors. Yes, you want something that's not displeasing to the ear, but you want accuracy first and foremost. You don't buy monitors because ' these things really kick out the bass!' . You want something that's not hyped. That's what differentiates monitors from home stereo speakers.

3) This post really doesn't belong in this forum, and I apologize for continuing it.

4) I have the Tannoy Reveals (unpowered). About $325-350. I think they're swell. Just my totally uninformed opinion. If I could afford them, I'd have the Mackie 824's, if that tells you anything about my tastes.
