Alesis Monitor One

Yeah,one of the CD's I used to audition monitors with has some of my mixes on them and they actually sounded decent on the Monitor Ones....thats when I knew they sucked....
 
Maybe you are being too hard on yourself. thinking an honest representation of your mixes should sound terrible. I did the same side by side comparison using AJA, Zoso, and a burned copy of me doing a so so mix.

I could see where that AJA didnt even sound good on the proto-js,and thats one cd that should sound magnificent on any studio monitor. But the led zep 4 (Zoso) sounded bad with alot of distortion on the monitor ones, which was a suprise but Aja sounded very good alot like the mackie 824s that were also there to try. I couldnt afford the mackies so I desided on the monitor ones. So you see I didnt just go for the best deal because the proto-js were free then if you bought an alesis R100 refence anp in a 300.00 package.

And with the monitor ones you can place the bass without resorting to going to your home stereo pair because of an inadequate bass extention.

My theory is that If I used a monitor that doesnt reproduce deep bass without a sub Ill be boosting those frequencies to make up for it, therefore not translating well to speakers that are allready strong in those frequencies.
 
By the way if read those posts out of order Its my mistake, Idid however read reccomendationd from blue bear campaining for both the ysm-1s and the proto-js. So they must be ok. Im sorry if you thought I was trashing them. Sometimes when I aquire something and think alot of it I can get insulted by persons putting them down. But it is a matter of taste isnt it.;)
 
Aw, feel free to talk trash if youd like.....actually the lower bass response is one of the reasons I wanted them....I was advised by Shailat in another thread that when monitoring in an acoustically challenged room, you wont want real deep bass because of the funky reflections yada yada technical jargon....so again, its whatever works for the individual.....peace.....
 
more bass also generally sounds good when playing back, but is very good at hiding midrange detail.

This is the same reason why people cant mix with the mackie hr824s

I cant mix with the hd824s for a good reason. they cost too damn much.:(
 
well, Ive had monitors that had low end comparable to the 824s. A friend of mine tested both. The low end on the monitor twos covered the midrange.

Now, If someone like craig anderton complains about the bass boost in the 824, who am I to disbelieve him.
 
I have to say this...... I love these Roland DS-90a's! The sound is unbelievable...as is the control I have over my mixes now. I can't believe I've been mixing through a stereo and a PA all of these years. I was boosting the bass up too much before, then finding out in the car that it was too much. These are telling me exactly what I need to hear!

Here ya go:

I've got the Monitor Ones with the RA-100 and I'm not extremely impressed. They tend to give me ear fatigue rather quickly. Also, they seem to have too much punch. Furthermore, my mixes sound pretty good through them, but do not translate incredibly well.

The third point involves learning the monitors, which I have been conscious of. Also, I'm going to try pulling them further from the wall (they are about 2 ft right now) to reduce the bass which may help ear fatigue and punch.

I would say the Monitor Ones are "adequate." There are definitely better monitors available for the price.
 
I use foam behind my monitors anyway to aviod the ports from bouncing off the walls.
 
Okay!!!

This is some good info ofcourse, but how come nobody mentions what type of music their doing...??? Does this not drasticly decide on how good your gonna find your monitors to be. I'm into hiphop, so good bass is okay because otherwise like someone else stated I'm sure I would turn it up to much. From now on if your gonna give your oppinion on monitors say what you use them for, classical is another ballpark than dance or whatever.

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think it matters TOO much. The purpose of monitors are to give you an accurate representation of the signal whatever it is. If it was really important, I would expect that event would have a hip hop series or alesis would have their rock model. (We've seen it in the "grunge" distortion pedal)

Having said that, if you're doing hip hop I assume you'd want to add a sub for sure.

But yeah keep in mind I don't necessarily know what I'm talking about so maybe you shouldn't listen to me.

I use event 20/20's and so far I've tried to use them on EVERYTHING

You guys are talking about two different things.

The port is only active in the very bottom octave of the monitors range. It would take a hell of a lot of foam to stop those frequencies from bouncing off the wall. What you can reduce with foam is the chuffing (air turbulence) noise associated with the port.

The wall acts an extended baffle in the low bass. Pulling the monitor away from the wall could help reduce the bass, but if your room is small it might no make much difference.

Yeah they're cool. I mean I'm not going to post anything saying "they sound great" (they do) But honestly, I haven't found many newer users that have put down their monitors unless they are like computer speakers or something. Think about it. Just about all the people that went out and bought the roland digitals, and the ones that got alesis monitor ones, and those of us who have 20/20's and the krk rockits....You don't hear many complaints you just hear "they sound great".....What I'm saying is take my opinion for what it's worth which isn't much :) I'm a beginner.

My mixes translate MUCH better (despite acoustical control room problems....I'm working on that and it's getting better)
 
I have to agree with BBB on the fatigue factor. I don't have any myself..... I'm still looking for something that suits me. But a good mate of mine who knows a heap more than me tried out many brands and ended up with the KRK Rockits. He advised me to steer clear of the M1s. He found them hard to listen to for long periods.
 
Am I a freak?!?!

Ive heard of fatigue but have never experinced it. It could be because I normally work a day job that is reasonably quiet but I have M1s and I have never had that problem.:confused:
