I did my first legit mix with my own production. Sucked. I have been recording pre-mixed beats made by other people in my group to my hardware. Today I focused on mixing my own beat with my guys vocals. Did a mix, put it in his car cd player. It was horrible. The instrumental lacked bass, his vocals lacked bass and lacked the over all "round" sound you want to hear in vocals. I know its hard to obtain a "warm" sound with digital, but damn.. I am using a AKG sp1000 small condensor diaphram mic. I was told it would still be good to use even though its main intent was for instruments vs. vocals. But I am beginning to wonder. Currently, id rather use my Shure 58 dynamic mic, at least it was easier to eq the final sound. The main issue is my monitors however. I checked out the ALesis monitors(Alesis Monitor One MK2 Studio Monitors}. They seem to have good reviews. They areright in the price range of $200 which I dont have but I will spend. I want to use them with my home reciever. The reciever has an option for a flat eq response.

Given all my setup info, will these work. My home reciever jus has the deal where you plug the bare wire into the reciever, will these monitors work for that. As far as the condensor, I think if I adjust the bass on the mixer up some but sparingly, it would help with the lower frequecies, then I could maybe get closer to the fuller sound I want, yes/no? Hollah.............................pM

There are many issues at work here. Probably number one is your mixing environment and the acoustics in the room. Anyone who tells you mixing/mastering at home is easy is either deaf or a fool. Creating a room that will enable you to make mixes that translate well to other systems takes a lot of time and planning. You need acoustic treatments to give you balanced reflections and absorption and a good monitoring system.

Check out the Studio Building forum for some tips on acoustics. If you get the acoustics nailed then chances are just about any monitors will work. Without good acoustics then you will have problems with any set of monitors.

Yeah, you can get a good mix out of any pair of monitors. the #1 thing is your monitoring environment. Imagine an SSL in a Gymnasium. think the mix will rock? LOL Probably not.

I have these monitors ( the powered pair) and mix in an untreated room and get GREAT results. The room isn't terrible but it is not treated the way it should. All of my mixes sound good on all systems I play them on. I am mixing acoustic rock type of stuff with a bunch of hand drums and electric bass. I would go for it!

Thanx for the replys man. Iposted on the "building a studio or what ever" forum for some ideas. I am going to go for both. Cuz for one, if I give my room some accoustic treatment, that would help out with both mixing over all and recording with a condensor mic, right? Speakers, either way, I need new monitors regardless cuz the ones I have are kinda goin out on me, so I might as well invest in some decent monitors. Thanx for the posts, man. Maybe when I get some tracks mixed together yall can have a listen and give me some feedback. If people do that here. pM
