I'm thinking of using the HD24 as a front end to my computer system. How are the AD/DA converters on this baby? I'm also thinking it's about time to get some new preamps...16 to be exact. What should I do? I kinda want to upgrade from my mackie preamps. Any suggestions? Should I get one of those presonus m80s and mix and match the other 8? Is it possible to do this without having a mixer or should I stick with my mackie mixer and just plug in my external preamps? My budget for preamps is about 3 grand or so. Thanks

I was reading a post by Roger Nichols on his board about a year ago and he was raveing about the converters in it. He said they were as good as Apogee and he was doing his next album he did through it. The fact that it recorded too was just the bonus plan. I haven't heard anything about them since. Now that its on the market I've been waiting to hear what end users have to say because I'm very interested in one as well. Evidently (unless something has changed due to Alesis' problems and take over) this is the first time that Alesis is making their own converters as opposed to buying them as in the ADATs.
On you pre amp question, IMHO, I'd mix and match to have as many crayons in the box as possble. In an eight channel unit, the Personus looks good to me. I've had my eye on a few units (the Presision 8 is about twice as much but man its looks nice).:D

Great Voice A/D

I'm new but singing into the HD24 thru a mixer sounds rich, boomy, and clean. I did a live recording last night and really thought the sound came out good for quick setup.

Sounds like the converters are quality. As for preamps, have any of you heard the studioprojects or FMR preamps yet? I'd be interested to know if these will be good options as well. Thanks.

But in all fairness, when they asked if he used his 'atomoc clock' on it, he never did say. :)
Hell, they probablly sound fine.

Brutha', that's all I needed to FULLY convince me to sell my daughter's toys, including her Barbie-Doll Collection and my wife's jewelry to obtain the HD24!!!!! Thankyou!

I'll go sell mah sweet lovin' mama as soon as the HD24 hits Sweden... gotsto have!!!

Maybe I can also use it as an FTP-server with PRON!!!

Sorry Guys swtiched

I did it. Returned the Alesis and got a Mackie HDR.
Very $$$, but Alesis has no Virtual Tracks although I really liked the unit.

I sort of regret letting it go. I may add it later as a secondary.

Sorry

Sorry to hear you got sucked into the Mackie hype. If nothing else, Greg and his clan are damn good at hype. I'm just not a fan of their new dumbed down MDR. It's a computer configured to record. Heck, if I want to use my computer to record, i can do it cheaper and better. Of course, this is just mho.

The sad part about the Mackie system is it's the same unit as the full blown system without the video card and the OS was tweeked a bit not to support one. If you know what your doing you can drop in a card, re-tweek it and it's their flagship model. They just dumbed it down and cut the price to fuck with the Alesis HD launch.

HDR and DM-24

I did buy the HDR and matched it up with a Tasam DM-24 ditital board. I will probably get the HD24 when the price drops as a traveling unit.

I really like it.
