Aktive monitors.

I´m thinking buying aktive monitors to my home. I´m thinking Tannoy Reveal, Fostex pm-1 or maybe event tr5... Any opinions which of these would be the best invest?? Is Tannoy any better for example for those two? Tannoy is little more expensive. I want to get "fine" monitors that i can make reasonable mixes. And i want it to be a monitor that i can also listen music without holding my ears after 30 minutes.(what genenlec does for example).

From that list, I can only say I've worked with Tannoy Reveal Passive Speakers. Obviously a bias opinion.

For the price range, Tannoy's are all around excellent monitors to work with. Nice flat response. They give a pretty accurate reference yet the low end will drop off sharply at about 70hz. Something to watch for, no biggie.

How about looking into Dynaudio BM6 passives and a power amp. The Dyn's are about $850 a pair and will knock the crap out of the others you listed. But that might be out of your range. Of the ones you listed, I would go Tannoy.

Yes that´s little too much for me. My budjet is about 500 euros. It seems that people don´t have very much experience about active Tannoy Reveals. Many are using the passive. The active is the double price of the passive but is it worth it? Or is there any other monitors at same price that would be maybe better....?

In my experience, if there is more than a $250 or $350 difference (sorry not sure about the Euro conversions), than passive is the way to go. Active speakers tend to sound a little "duller" to me, and having the ability to upgrade your amp is a huge bonus. Active monitors tend to seem like they have less headroom as well. Of course this is all just my opinon also.

Yes but with the passive it means that you should buy a really expensive amplifier first. If you want the passive sound good you have to have a good amplifier. I was actually first thinking about buying a new stereo amp but then i started thinking that it´s maybe better to buy a active monitors if i want to try get some fine mixes.

The run of the mill Haflers sound as good if not better than all the amps in your sub $1000 active monitors. You need a solid amp. Not necessarily a really great expensive amp to match the amps in most active monitors. Just avoid the samson's and behringers of the amp world and you will be fine Hafler makes pretty good sounding, fairly affordable, and very reliable amps.

A really high end power amp really isn't all that important unless you already have really good monitors, great D/A, etc.

A passive with a hi-fi amp would probably beat out an active you could get for the same price.

Not true. You can find good deals on stereo amplifiers and not have to spend too much more. If anything, it's worth the additional investment.

In my experience, anyone serious about mixing would greatly benefit from passive because of the added flexibility they provide.

An amp inside your speaker is not going to be the same as an amp outside your speaker.

Think about it.

I agree with LRosario. Passive adds flexibility and leaves room for growth, and to me, just plain sounds better. Someone above mentioned that a high end amp isn't all that important unless you have really nice AD/DA conversion and monitors etc... That, in my opinion is not true at all. A Bryston amp will still make a pair of Samson speakers sound much better than the Samson amp. That doesn't mean run out and buy one, for the price difference some other piece of gear might make a bigger difference in your mixes. Evry person places importance on different things. To me my console and my monitors are more important than my conversion and my mics. Thats why I just bought a HUGE console. For now I am extremely happy with my Dynaudio monitors and my amps. There are others though that prefer to buy a Mackie and invest in mics, and maybe outboard preamps. It really matters what affects your creativity and workflow the most as to which should be more important.
