AKG414's or Josephson c42's?

Personally, I would probably choose the 414's in this case. I have always like LD condensors better on drums and percussion. For acoustic guitars I prefer one of each, and for stringed instruments I usually prefer SD. For vocals and electrics i like LD condensors most of the time, but even on vocals SD condensors can sometimes really be the right ticket. In the end though, I find myself needing and/or using LD condensors much more often. The good news is that this really is a win win situation.

There are other peices to the puzzle as well. The pre amp you use could be slower than a frozen slug and that has an effect. It could be clean and very capable of catching drums. One example would be to compare the earthworks pre to a soundcraft ghost. The ghost sounds a little fatter, the earthworks sounds cleaner both have their place. Both use good components. They have a different sound. The focusrite isa 428 has a variable input impedence. The same pre with the same mic can sound quite a bit different just by making that adjustment.

I'm using a rack of API pres (512c's). They actually make even crappy mics sound better...lol. I guess those would fall in the clean, in your face sound...hehehe...

Well anyways....414's might be the ticket....I can always use my c1000s pair in conjunction with those for OH's for the time being....(they don't sound THAT horrible...) Maybe I'll just put them over the toms instead of the overheads.....

The 414's sound like they would do a better job at being a "room" mic too...

Now if only those XLS pairs weren't $2k. I've seen the XLII's brand new on ebay for around $1300/pair.... AKG says the XLII's have a mid-frequency presence boost so they suit vocalists better than being an all-around mic. anyone else agree?
