Hello all and sundry.
This is pretty much the longest shot I have attempted in a while, but does anyone have any contacts for possible old stocks of replacement capsules for D12's??
I think mine may be shot ... but then I am NOT a technician.
I opened it up and it seems as if the humbucking coil is not even connected inline (repeat ... I am not a techy so I could be way up the dogs rear end here).
I bought the mic used and it seems to be a little lifeless.
No hums, buzzes, crackles or anything and it 'works' fine as such .... hard to explain what I mean by lifeless ... I last used a D12 in a pro studio almost 10 years ago and I remember the 'natural sound' of the D12 outperforming anything by a serious WOW factor.
A few weeks ago I FINALLY got my studio up and running after 8 years of gear investment (went into partnership with a non-gear-junkie who has cool premises) and when we checked my D12 against his Shure PG-52 (PG ... not Beta or anything) the Shure is SO MUCH more punchy and fuller whereas my D12 sounds VERY flabby and lacks anything even vagualy resemblent to the word punch.
If anybody replies to this, please don't worry about such issues as mic placement, techniques, EQ, drum-heads, acoustics etc as these are NOT the problem ... I think the chase can be cut down to one of the following :
1. My D12 is a goner.
2. There is a wiring abnormality (raises questions as to who and why this was altered in the first place).
3. Perhaps I have a 50 ohm version (read somewhere that the 200 ohm is better).
4. My memories of the FAT D12 of 10 years ago has been jaded by the realities of a FURTHER 10 years worth of age on both my judgements and the condition of ANY 50 year old mic's capsule .... PLUS the debateable fact that there are many EXCELLENT mic manufacturers out there who are SURELY well aware of such legendary kick drum mics as the D12 and are POSSIBLY quite capable of equalling (or maybe even improving on) its' performance.
Anyone have any suggestions, contacts or advice?
BTW ... I live in South Africa so I may not be able to respond to any possible answers until the following day, as we are 12 hours ahead (assuming the majority of you guys are in the U.S. ... no offence to all others!!).
Thanks
Steven
