D6 sounds good but is very one dimensional, I started with a D112, it was alright, but later bought a Beta 52 and love it so much better.

Best bass drum mic I own is the AT4047 though. But I have to build a thick tunnel in order to block out the cymbals from coming through, so I record most things with the Beta 52 for convienience.

D112 all the way for me! Well, perhaps not all the way, but so far I haven't been in a situation it hasn't worked in. That said, the only time I've used a beta 52 is recording a live gig where the drummer had one mounted inside his kick.

I prefer the D-112 too... it seems to capture more bottom end than the rest, making it easier to do a bit of subtractive EQ if needed, depending on the song. It's easy to feel the kick with a D-112 too.

Inside the kick isn't the best placement of a beta 52. It likes to be just in the port hole.

I really don't like either of these but I'd pick the Shure first if that was all I had. I agree that the beta52 does not like being too deep in the shell. I think it needs some air around it to ward off the low-mid bloom. I really like it on a bass cabinet and maybe this speaks to this very thing. After years and years of micing kik drums and using most of the popular choices I still like the fidelity and the high db level tolerance of the ATM25. Its on the same level of the Heil mics, PR40/45. I also like the Sennheiser 902 and the 602. The 602 having a bunch more low end but not a flabby low end requiring a lot of cut.The D6 is a great live mic but under the microscope of a recording session it seems to be placement sensitive in a way that live it doesnt demonstrate. A very surprising kik mic is the Audix D4.
