So what is the current going equivalent for the AKG 451? I used a pair (rented) a few weeks back and wouldn't mind scoring their equivalent........ unless someone has a pair in good condition for sale!

Bruce

what capsule where you using?...that is one of the extra "goodies" about the 451. Personally, I think you'd have to think of a Nueman KM184...or something else in the "big leagues" to get something of equal quality. Hey...maybe a Marshall 603!!! 100 bucks a pair!!

I knew someone was going to ask.... since they were rented, I didn't ask about that particular piece of info, but they were very smooth on drum overheads.... I'll ask back at the ranch...

If you get them Bruce make sure you get the 10db pad which can be put after the capsule. :)
cheers

Hmmm... are the capsules especially sensitive? The ones I rented did not have the pad, but I had no distortion problems.... I have to beleive that it was that particular mic that gave the cymbals a crisp clear, yet warm tone....
(it wasn't the pres - Mackie 1604vlz!)

Hey Bruce I could be wrong, but I think I remember reading that you can still get the capsules that came with the 451 combined with a different mic body under a different model number, I'll see if I can dig up the article. I cant remember the capsule numbers but if you can find out, a search for those might turn something up.
Good luck.

Bruce - the pad is the same size as the capsule and plugs in first followed by the capsule. I found that with really loud drummers the pad was advisable. ;)
There is a 10db and a 20db pad available.

cheers

I always liked the omni capsule (ck1, I believe)...on OV's...and the CK5 made it a champ on the snare too! I wish I had a pair, currently. btw...how much are you paying for rental, Bruce?

Bruce..

Have you ever tried the fabled Oktavas? (MC012)
I'd sure like to hear a shootout from you anytime. 'cause the Oktavas sound like a miracle to me...
