I'm curious why I don't see much written about the AKG 3000-B when I search through previous discussions. In terms of large-diaphragm condenser mics, it certainly seems competitively priced vs. an AT-4033 or a Studio Projects C-1...at least on musician's friend (which doesn't offer the C-1, so i looked at the studio projects website for the C-1 price); all three for $299.99

Is there any reason the AKG seems so unpopular (not in terms of negative feedback but lack of any)? Is there an appreciable difference between these microphones?

Sorry if this has been addressed before, I searched through the forums and didn't find much commentary on the 3000B

Thanks alot

tim, the Studio Projects C1 sounds better than the AKG C3000B for vocals.
I had one and it sounded "nice", however, it has a bright sound akin to
the newer AKG C414's. The C3000B seems to work better on female
singers than male, by the way. The C1 is a lot smoother.

c3000b

It has a rich, dark sound, that suits some vocals and not others..it's less high-endy than the original c-3000, and makes a good all around mic for instruments, vocals, whatnot..it's one of those workhorse mics, at least for me..the c1 from what I hear is mostly a vocal mic..never having used it or heard it tho, I can't say for certain..When/if I get some more money, maybe a pair of C3s (or c1's) will find their way over here..

You might want to look into the AKG C4000 B microphone? This is a rich, full, bold and sweet sounding microphone that does everything extraordinarily well. It's my first choice for amp mic'ing [even over an SM-57 in fact]. Also wonderful when used solo on acoustic guitar [or in tandem with a secondary SD mic like the C 391B/C451B] The C 4000B is not that not much more dough than a C 3000B and is MUCH more versatile [three patterns, -10dB pads and bass roll offs]. For vocals, it's fine for many situations. One of AKG's nicer mics IMHO.:)

I'll comment because I own one. It's a decent mic. I've used it with good success on vocals and acoustic instruments. It has a bit of hyped high end but not as bad as some other budget priced mics I've heard.

Track Rat,

My particular C 4000 B has a less hyped high end than other C 4000Bs I have auditioned previously. This probably is due to the component's tolerances? Mine is smoother and really souful sounding....lovely microphone For the record, I much prefer the Sennheiser MD 421 II or their old 409/509 for dynamic mics when mic'ing electric guitar cabinets. Track Rat, what's your opinion of the C 3000B for guitar cabinet applications [compared to the C 4000B for the same purpose]? Just curious as I havent heard the new C 3000B yet?:)

I don't like it much on electric guitar cabinets, it's a little too harsh there. That's where the 4033 really shines, IMHO. I've been using the C-3000 on floor toms though and I feel it kicks some serious ass there.

ouch

You put a condenser near a drum? I'm too anal and paranoid I guess :) Maybe when I'm rich :P

Well, I use C-1000's on toms, C-3000 on floor tom, an AT 4033 on the outside of the kick and another 4033 about 5 feet out in front of the kit. Also if I use a mic under the snare, I either put up an Earthworks SR-71 or an Octava MC-012. All condensors.:D

i have a c3000b and use it on vocals. i am happy with it, although i haven't really tried any other mic, but it is the best mic i have and probably the one of my many that one would suggest for vocals. i have also used it on my floor tom and it sounds okay i guess, also on my drum o/head till i got some small diaphragms. i think it was worth my $300.00.

Thanks for all the feedback, this is extremely helpful!

Damn

Dude, when one of those stereotypical lumbering jardhead dumbass drummers knocks one of those mics, you're gonna be not so happy :P

That's when I have my second engineer, Vito (no nose) Zucarrello "explain" studio etiquette and the importance of remitting the cost of any damaged studio property if he/she would like to retain the use of their legs.

The C3000b is the only condensor I have. When I use it together with the symetrix 528e (my only pre), I'm pretty happy. Directly into the VS1880 it is mostly unsatisfying.

Since I only have the c3000b and an sm57, I use it on pretty much everything. Used it on overheads with good results too.

There's a song in the mp3-mixing clinic that has the c3000b on vocals. Might wanna check it out. Vocals sound pretty good. Here's the LINK...

Great stuff.

I have a 3000b but I have never had the chance to compare it to a C-1 or a AT4033, so that was really the origin of my question.

With that disclaimer, I would second Track Rat's finding that it is a little harsh on guitar cabs. I got a guitar sound i was pretty happy with using the 3000b together with an SM57, but there was a harshness in the high end on the 3000b track that was not really to my liking...I couldn't tell if it was my amp or the mic, but I am beginning to think it is the mic.

Thanks again! Will have to try it on the floor tom next time...

The local music store allowed me to bring one home last night to try. It was okay on my vocals , but I loved it on my acoustic guitars. I used the bass roll-off switch and put it in front of the 15th fret of my boomy Martin D-35. (I'm mostly a finger stylist) It didn't pick up the boom, and left me with a very sweet sound. Perhaps there are other mics that would be as good, but hey, the local music store carries them, were nice enough to let me bring home three mics and try 'em. And they sell at street price. I can't get that kind of service from maiil-order.

I'm buying it. AND my husband said last night (and this is adirect quote) "You should buy TWO mics." and "It doesn't make any sense to SKIMP on microphones." I am taking that as a big go-ahead for a nice vocal mic.

I also tried the C2000B ($200) on my vocals. It was a bit high-end harsh, but I somehow I liked it for my voice. It boosted me out of Karen Carpenter land (which is where I tend to dwell). Don't know if I'll buy it. The C3000B is quite adequate for vocals, though not exciting. The local store also carries Audio Technica.

So far I like the sound of my AKG3000B it is by far the best Mic I have owned to date. I was lucky and got mine thru a free give away with the purchase of a Lexicon MPX1 at Guitar Center.
