Hey! I'm pretty new to recording. I plan on making some covers on youtube. Anyone have recommendations on what mic and video camera I should buy? Also, is there a good voice editing software that is free?

what type of covers... Acoustic? Full Band? Do you have an interface? What's your budget?

You need to elaborate a little on what you want to do and your goals before anybody will be able to help.

"Voice editing software." I don't know what you mean by that. There's the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), which records the digital signal and where you can cut/copy/paste the track, and there are plug-ins in the DAW (eq's, compression, modulation, etc.) that shape the sound. I have yet to have seen a good DAW with plug-ins that is free. If you want to start, you can try a program called Reaper. The download is free, and if you like it, you can purchase it for I think $40. Don't be so quick to buy something. Gather lots of information before you buy.

Acoustic/piano covers with singing. I have mixcraft 4, would that be suitable? My budget is 400 dollars. Will I be able to buy a decent mic/camera with that? And I'll make sure to gather lots of information before I buy anything.

You need a mic, interface and a camera. A DAW to mix down your audio (Mixcraft will work). A video program to let you combine video and audio. What kind of quality are you looking for?

Start by reading the sticky threads here for newcomers.
How many tracks do you want to record at once - vocals + piano (how many mics on piano, or stereo electric or ...?)?
You might 'get away' with a Shure SM57 or 58, and M Audio Fast Track Pro and a $100 video camera. But that leaves you no money left for cables, mic stand, software ...

Read the threads above and understand a little about what you're asking and you'll see why your question is difficult to answer.

If you want to plonk away on the piano and use your vid cam's mic you might just get away with $400, but you're not going to like the quality, I would suspect.

At least check out Reaper and down load it for the trial.

PreSonus AudioBox USB 2X2 USB Recording System: Shop Pro Audio & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend (comes with presonus studio 1... actually a very good DAW for free)

Shure SM7B Microphone with Switchable Response: Shop Pro Audio & Other Musical Instruments | Musician's Friend

Logitech HD Webcam C310 Web camera

get that and a cable...

i know its more like 600 than 400... but TRUST me... its worth it.

edit - i know i went cheap on the camera... but if it were me... i'd be FAR more concerned on what i sounded like than the quality of what i looked like whilst doing covers
