Ok I got all my equipment setup all the ins are plugged into the ins and the outs are plugged into the outs. The i's are dotted and the t's are crossed. Now what? Here's my question I'm going to be doing my first recording soon. The setup is two guys with acoustic guitars one of them sings. For each song I was thinking of having them play, then the singer would go back and lay the vocals then have the lead go back and lay the lead guitar, mix, master and export to CD. Am I right is this proper, common, wrong etc. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks you I know you guys will come through for me you always do. later

If it sounds right than do it.:D Yeh that way could work. Just be careful with the bleed of the other guitar in each other's mics. If you were not micing and going direct if the guitars had pickups than disregard the last comment. Direct souds horrible to me for acoustic guitar. It sounds too midrange.

Anyway, so that way sounds good. Just make sure the singer can play guitar without singing at the same time and doesn't lose his place in the song.

thanks i'll make sure about the singer. I almost forgot the most important step after exporting to cd. I become a famous multiplatinum producer hell bent on world domination

MUAHAHAHA

Make sure you "take the liberty" of ordering some pizza that will arrive about two hours into the session (don't let them know that it's coming - surprise them).

Stop the clock at a nice point and feast for a bit, chatting about how things are going IF IT'S A GOOD POINT - Don't stop in the middle of a great situation...

If anything gets out of hand, or screwy, at least they'll leave thinking that you're a cool dude. If not, you've got a little time to blow off steam and give yourself a mental break.

Not that anything ever gets out of hand or screwy during a recording session...

another question

One more thing speaking of the being on clock what is a good rate to start out charging. I have no clue. by the way the pizza idea is a great

charging? If you've never done it before, and your results are unproven, I'd say you'd better refrain from charging anything.

Maybe you should pay them for being your guinea pig. Seriously, how much would you pay a noob mechanic to practice working on your car?

Yeah kinda what i was thinkin but who knows maybe i'll just put out a donations jar. huh what do ya think about that.

I hope you have another gig that pays your bills.

With the set of balls you have for wanting to charge actual $ having never done any recording before, my guess is you're in porn...........:D

No not in porn Fiance would hate that I'm sure. But I figure if someone is willing to pay me then why stop them. Can anyone argue with that. Besides that's the idea behind the donations jar. Oh and don't worry guys I have a real job, but if you wanna send me money to help fund my up and coming studio then by all means do.

If they want to pay you then let them pay. Just as long as their happy with the recording. Don't let them pay if they are feeling guilty and only want to do it to be nice. Only if they are happy with the recording.

You have to be careful when charging them. Because you haven't done this before, they might not be 100% satisfied and might go somewhere else if the price is cheaper or the same. That's why when you're starting out it's good to give a few free recordings so then they feel like their special and next time they'll pay good. It's all about respect between you and the customer. If they respect you and the work you do they won't hesitate to pay you. Just be careful as it's your first time. Don't let them get the wrong impression.

Thanks for the advice Tukkis. I wasn't planning on saying hey you owe me such and xuch amount. I'm going to leave it up to them to offer when we're done with the recording and the CD is in there hands. Cuz your right if they like it enought they'll hook me up. or at least next time they might help out ya know.
