advice on getting a new bass

Hi. I've had bargain bin bass after another (usually beat up pawn shop deals). This last one I had I let a friend borrow for a gig and I wasn't there but i guess in a heat of the moment thing, my bass gets destroyed. He paid me the 100 bucks I paid for it but now I need a new one. While I can play moderately well I really don't know much about them other then stuff i've read on here and a few other websites.

Was looking for some suggestions on a 4 string in the 750-1000 range. Style wise it will range really from acoustic rock type stuff to industrtial metal type stuff so versatile would be nice. Any help you can give would be awesome.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Fender P-Bass or Jazz Bass, and they're both easily within your price range.

+1 on the Fenders, but look at some used Music Man basses, too, like a Sterling or Stingray. The HH models are especially versatile, I hear.

Sounds kinda like my History.LOL Finally bought a Ric few yrs. ago, and wished I would have bought it many moons ago. If you shop around, you can get a Ric 4003 for $1100.00 with case; probably be the last bass you will ever buy.

Thanks so much. Funny enough the 3 basses I think i've heard the most about were fender, rickenbackers and warwick. I liked how you mentioned Slowrider that it would be an instrument iw oudlnt' ahve to replace. That seems kind of important to me when spending that much money on an instrument and I think that could probably be said about all 3 of those. I know i can test out the fenders at a local shop here not so sure about the rick' or warwick.

I'm really happy with my Geddy Lee J-bass by Fender ( $800 new ).

It's passive so you don't have to worry about a 9v battery, but the vintage style pickups run pretty hot almost making it sound active--it's the best of both worlds. Also, it has a really fast/slim neck (almost too slim!!!!).

This bass can cover many styles of music: besides the tone knob, there is two volume knobs ( one for the bridge and one for the neck) so you can really blend to taste. Neck pickup by itself gives you almost a p-bass feel (deep, smooth, warm, mellow) and bridge pickup only gives you more drive and attack for more aggressive styles.

It's definitely worth a look.

Thanks again guys. I'm certainly going to spend alot of time trying to find/play on your suggestions and researching the ones I can't get ahold of. A store here owned by a friend said he has a Warwick Double Buck Corvette (i'm assuming used) that he'd sell me for 900 , does anyone have any experience on that particular model?

+1 on the Fenders especially the J-bass for versatility. I'd like to put in a plug for the Gibson Ripper. Used they go for about $800. Great basses

make sure to play a G&L before you buy, it's basically a fender built by people that give a shit.

warwick is ok if you get the old ones, anything built in about the last 5 or so years is fairly disasppointing in my opinion.

What kind of a-hole borrows an instrument for a gig and then destroys it (I am assuming intentionally)?? I'd be wanting the replacement value (i.e., not just what you paid for it) for starters. The receipt could include a punch in the nose and a kick in the nuts that hopefully will make more of a mark than the money involved. It's just a totally classless, douchebag move by your so called "friend".

i was thinking the same thing... though i can imagine some other band member (ok, the drummer or lead singer ) getting trolleyed and thinking it was funny. it sounds like their kind of joke but yeah - just because something was got for cheap doesn't mean it's a moving target - i've still got my trombone from when i started 8 years ago... it was second hand and it's knackered beyond belief from lots of hard playing, but i still use it occasionally, and its sentimental value makes it irreplaceable... if i lent it to any off my friends they know damn well how much bother they'd be in if there was even the smallest amount of damage

First off I can't thank you guys enough, this is overwhelming how much advice i've gotten. I'm really trying to take it all in, theres a ton of options/choices.


And yeah about the "friend". I mean i just didn't want to outwardly vent some misguided anger here. I was devestated cause I just thought the thing was about as disrespectful as it gets. It's just easier to call someone a friend and move on from there then spend a few paragraphs going off on the guy that no one here knows. I do appreciate the opinions though as I felt about the same way.
