Hey guys,

My EMU 1820's began to act dodgy to the point of needing to be required but rather than going for a straight replacement I plan on negotiating credit to go towards a different product and would like some advice on what would be a good route to go down.

I plan to move away from the dependancy on a full desktop system due to the PCI host card which makes a Firewire/USB interface the best bet. I'd preferably go for Firewire for stability but if a USB-based product's been proven to be good I'll consider it.

The main limitation is that it'd have to be a product stocked by Sounds Live, check out http://soundslive.co.uk/categories~name~Sound-Cards~ID~13.asp for an idea of what's on offer.

I'm not looking to spend a vast amount more than the price of the EMU 1820 but could be tempted if a product's features made it seem worthwhile.

So far the most likely candidates seem to be:
1. M-Audio Firewire 18/14 - although I hear drivers may be problematic
2. Presonus FirePod - although that's pushing the budget to its limits
3. Tascam FW-1082 - apprently a solid piece of kit with the advantage of having a control surface built in, seems good for the price. Wouldn't be very good for gig applications though, too clunky, could manage a small box or 1U/2U box but that'd be a bit to big to lug arround.
4. Echo AudioFire-8 - like the FirePod, is pushing the budget, but looks possible.
5. TerraTec - Phase-88-Rack

I'll be heading in to have the device replaced tomorrow so any input to set me in good stead for making a decision by then would be greatly appreciated.

Matt.
