g'day i've been a analog man for a long time at it's now time to move on. i have been looking at 2nd hand adats for a month now and i just don't no enough about them to drop the money down, is there anyway of checking the contition of the head and other parts without pulling it apart, and what are the heads worth to replace if i had to do it, the machine i've been looking at is a blackface 16bit. main use is that it has eight tracks, not four i will be mixing it back to computer or 2 track so are they good or not.
any help or advice would be great.
thanks.

Check the other possibilities too. I don't know what the adat is worth, but there are other possibilities that come to mind. Eg, one of the newer HD recorders, maybe a multichannel audiocard... All pretty good concurrents for the old ADATs...

this should help http://www.studio-maint.com/adat2.html its all about adat maintainanceand shows you how to find out how many hours an adat has done....

those old black face adats have been goign very cheap in melbourne, saw one in the trader for $600, and there is one at melmusic for the same price (australian dollars)......
