What board are most of you using with the HD24?
Thanks, titan

I bought a used Topaz-24 last year and it works for me!

Anyone use the Mackie SR24x4 VLZ? Any reasons NOT to go with the Mackie?

What board?

Good Question Titanship. I have been wondering the same thing. I feel comfortable with analog. That is what I am using now, but I wonder if I shouldn't go for a digital board (eg., Tascam DM24 or the Behringer DDX I think its called). One way I am looking at it is this: Go with an analog eight buss and a HD24 for tracking, then use the new hard drive cradle that Alesis is supposed to be coming out with to transfer to computer for editing. I am courious as to what others think?

My situation is this. I don't "get out much." Meaning, I don't travel in the circles of any technical gurus. Even if I did, it wouldn't rub off on me.
Add to that, I have a family and a real job that keeps me busy. So, my available time to learn new gear is nill. $$ to spend is also at a minimum. Digital mixers/Computers? No thanks, I'll take my knobs. I'll let someone else sweeten it for me (if need be) By the way, did Jimmy Hendrix run all his stuff into a computer? hehe

Anywho, New Creature, are you about to purchase an HD24?

I like this guy Titanship!!! He thinks EXACTLY like me!

Yo' Titanic-ship, I originally began recording to ADAT's. I then tried
rec'ding to CakeWalk & CEP but the learning curve, crash factor,
latency issues, impatience and lack of knobs, led's,faders and switches made me go back to ADAT's and outboard gear! Wanting
to upgrade my rec'ding medium, I found the HD24 a perfect match for my needs! Low price,24/96 up to 12 tracks, editing, scrubbing,
dual hard drive-bays,etc., man this joint was a perfect solution for an impatient jerk like me! The only prob I had was the boards
that I owned (and still do,the Alesis Studio 24 & 32 and a old Mackie 1202 vlz did not offer me the tracks and routing options I needed. Plus the fact,my cash-flow was down to a quarter tank full, I purchased a used Topaz 24/8 from Sammy's that was missing 3 knobs and was dusty as hell! Took it home, cleaned ALL
the contacts, in's and outs including channel faders and never looked back. I eventually replaced the missing knobs by...ahem...
"borrowing" them from a particular music store in NYC.

I too have a fam of which I must get the most bang out of a buck!
Yeah, I would luv to own all top-end sh#t, but I do the best I can whith whatever free $$$ I have!!! (And only the Lawd knows hoe addicted I am to out-board gear!!!)

Long Live Knobs,Buttons,Switches and LED's!
Peace

topaz 24/8

Misterque, I have a Topaz 32x8 and use ADATs as well. Currently I'm running my Topaz and ADATs at -10. Are you using -10 or +4
for your ADATs/HD24 with your Topaz?

This is a good point. I stumbled into this problem of gain staging between my HD24 and the outputs of the Mackie 1604VLZ. I have one I use as a sidecar to my main console (a StudioMaster) and I find it a problem getting level to the HD24, especially on quiet sources. This was never a problem with the ADATs that I operated at -10. Now a kick drum mic or a 57 in front of a loud amp it's not as much of an issue but acoustic guitar and a KM-184 can get noisey or even distorted. Playback from the HD24, I have to turn the gain pots completely down but then it sounds OK. I use stand alone pre's or the StudioMaster pre's +4 outs to drivw the HD24 now.

-10 and+4 questions

I didn't know "we" can control whether it's +4 or -10 on the ADATs (or HD24 for that mater), aren't those "fixed". I thought "proffessional" equipment was +4. I know we can switch the settings on some stuff (like effects, pre-amps), but I thought it was automatically +4 on the Alesis recorders?
And also the Mackie's??

On a different subject, I notice that MACKIE makes a 24 track hard drive recorder at the same price as the HD24. Any reason most people seem to go with the HD24?

It's almost 5:00. Head for the mountains...

I haven't yet broken down and upgraded my blackface ADAT's to an HD24 (but I want to REALLY bad), but I'm running my setup with a Yamaha MX400 24x4 mixer.

Titanship, you asked about the Mackie recorder (there is also a Fostex recorder in the same price range). Go hang out at the Mackie recording discussion board and you'll find a LOT of frustrated customers due to lack of upgrades from Mackie, and issues with restrictions on hard drives that can be used. From what I've read here there don't appear to be any drive compatibility issues with the HD24.

Just a couple cents worth.

Yes they are fixed and "pro" is +4..some model Adats were -10 and some were +4..The HD24 is a +4 device..

uhhm....

I don't think the Mackie SR is a good choice as a board for recording. It is intended as a live board and not engineered for recording. I am using a Mackie 24X8, which is specifically designed as a recording desk. It works great but wish I could afford a D8B!

I'm using a Mackie 32x8 bus mixer with my Alesis ADAT-HD24... but, I don't like the preamps or EQ on the Mackie mixer and I'm going to replace the mackie with a Topaz, Ghost, or something? ~Joe

Joe,You haven't lived untill you've used a Tascam 2600..
Yes I'm being sarcastic..LOL..Someday maybe next year a new board is on the agenda..Good luck in your hunt

Thanks Don.

Does anyone here have any comments on... Topaz vs Ghost?
