Can I use any sound card with fiber to control ADATs in ADAT Edit?
Or do I have to use the DA-88?

I was thinking about buying an Echo Mia.

Todd, your question is not that terribly clear, but I will take a stab at it.

Don't get Toslink Lightpipe connectors confused. Toslink Lightpipe on many devices ONLY support S/PDIF. ADAT lightpipe uses the same Toslink Lightpipe connector, but will pass 8 channels of audio via proprietary ADAT Lightpipe. If the soundcard SPECIFIES that it's Toslink connector will support ADAT Lightpipe digital I/O, then you are doing good. If not, that means it is only doing S/PDIF Lightpipe, and you will not get it to work with an ADAT.

Next. ADAT Edit software can prossibly be used with any number of soundcards. What functions it will accomplish via that soundcard really depends on how the developers intended it to work with the varying soundcard features available from card to card. "Controlling" an ADAT, if you mean transport controls (Play, Record, Rewind, Fast Forward, Track enable) would be done via a totally different cable than an Optical cable. So, no, you could not control transport features of the ADAT unless you have a ADAT sync connection on the soundcard.

I am not sure what Tascam DA-88's have to do with anything concerning ADAT's and Lightpipe. DA-88's use the TDIF connector for digital I/O and that is it.

Hope this helps. If you post a more specific question, and explain what it is you are looking to do, the reply will be far more specific too....:)
