I had a question about advice on recording my acoustic. i usually use the onboard fishman pickups instead of micing the guitar, but i noticed that on certain songs when i finger pick and slap the guitar for rhythm i get full clipping on the slaps. I dont want to scoop out the lows on my guitar preamp because i dont want to lose the lows on the strings i am picking with my fingers. so should i use a different technique? mic it instead? i was considering buying a mic preamp that has built in limiters and compressors. would that prevent the problem? or only reduce it slightly? (if so any advice on the most frugal tube mic preamp would be greatly appreciated) thanks

a compressor would definately help you out with this.

you could try turning down the output on your fishman..?

I'd suggest using a multiband compressor for this. Though these are usually used (mostly abused) for mastering, this is just the kind of situation where it's capabilities can be used intelligently. What you want to do is leave the upper-mids and highs alone, and compress just the lows and lower-mids that your guitar body is generating on those slaps.
During tracking, assuming a hardware multiband comp is out of the question, use a little less gain on the fishman, and maybe try micing. Avoid mic placement that will pick up too much body and proximity effect.
