Acoustic Guitar Recording Stereo ... Oktava mk012's or Marshall MXL 603's?

GC is offering the 603 (re-labeled the 991) along with the 990 mic for $99 dollars which is a good deal for a first timer on a budget.[/B]

Is the 991 really just a relabelled version of the 603? Does anyone have info that comes from mxl (as opposed to GC or MF) as to the truth of this?

I don't know... and I'd take that statement with a grain of salt until his statement has been proven.

No flame thrower lit over here...this thread is devoid of anything but good info. If all the threads you and I participated in were like this one, we'd have no issues.

Besides, I'm too busy to mess with you this weekend...I've got a CD to finish that we wanted to release in February...we're running a little behind, but everything is finally tracked. Now it's all up to me...

:D
Issues?

Good because it's Friday and time to see if skeelsd has any new news yet.

<and that mod would be?>

Middleman,

It is an upgraded Oktava 012 circuit. The reason I did it was that I wanted to see the difference between Oktava and 603 capsules themselves, so this way I had the same circuit.

Thanks for posting these, Marik.

I own three MK012s along with two 603s and these clips are the closest thing anyone's ever posted to what I hear when I compare mine to each other.

The "modded" 603 is interesting, but I can see why these mics use different circuits.

i think either mic will fit in different mixes fine.

its easy to hear the 603 has a brighter side than the mellow/middy 012.

i favor the 012 for most things i do

I think what most people hear as "bright", I hear as harsh. To me the mids (lower and upper) of the 603 are not as clear and pleasant as the MK012. By the same token, the low-end of the 603 isn't as compressed as the MK012's. I wish someone made a mic that had the best of both.

Heh, heh, I figured someone would say that. They’re on my (big) list. Especially since the price went down. :)

I'll throw in my 012 experience here. I have a couple of them from GC, the first of which I hand picked from a dozen that I auditioned. Then more than a year later I grabbed another one from GC, which I listened to carefully before I bought it, but didn't select from a batch or compare with my other one except by memory. When I got it home I set up the two 012s in an XY, sounded great. Then I set them up exactly side by side, and did some recording of a few sources. I did some spectrograph comparisons that looked like a ballistics match between two guns. Even a phase invert and null test showed remarkable cancellation. I don't doubt that there is some merit to the Oktava bad QC rep, and my experience is just one experience, but I also know that a large percentage of the negative posts about it are people parroting what they've read from the relatively few first hand accounts.

BTW - another thing to consider in this decision is the fact that you can get omni capsules for the 012, of which I have one from the Sound Room and truely love. Next I'll be getting a LOMO head, which is essentially a U-87 replacement diaphram in a lollipop head to attach to an 012 body. I've heard this makes a great vocal mic, but there's practically no way to hear one anywhere.

Mr. Gerst - any chance you could post something done with the LOMO head? PLEEEEEZE?

Cheers, RD
