I'll throw in my 012 experience here. I have a couple of them from GC, the first of which I hand picked from a dozen that I auditioned. Then more than a year later I grabbed another one from GC, which I listened to carefully before I bought it, but didn't select from a batch or compare with my other one except by memory. When I got it home I set up the two 012s in an XY, sounded great. Then I set them up exactly side by side, and did some recording of a few sources. I did some spectrograph comparisons that looked like a ballistics match between two guns. Even a phase invert and null test showed remarkable cancellation. I don't doubt that there is some merit to the Oktava bad QC rep, and my experience is just one experience, but I also know that a large percentage of the negative posts about it are people parroting what they've read from the relatively few first hand accounts.
BTW - another thing to consider in this decision is the fact that you can get omni capsules for the 012, of which I have one from the Sound Room and truely love. Next I'll be getting a LOMO head, which is essentially a U-87 replacement diaphram in a lollipop head to attach to an 012 body. I've heard this makes a great vocal mic, but there's practically no way to hear one anywhere.
Mr. Gerst - any chance you could post something done with the LOMO head? PLEEEEEZE?
Cheers, RD
