Hey dudes,
I have been asked by a friend to investigate both soundforge and acid but am completely ignorant about them.
Could anyone give me a brief out line of what these babies do and whether they are worth the money.

Cheers and sorry for my ignorance.

Sound Forge is a mono/stereo audio file editor. It allows a great amount of control over manipulating the audio data.

ACID is a tool for putting digital audio loops together. It automatically adjusts the different tempos of disparate loops so that they can lock in with each other. You can also record into ACID so you can play along with your loop collages.

There are different versions of both. There's Sound Forge 5.0, which is the high-priced full-bore version. There is also Sound Forge XP -- last I looked it was still the 16-bit version 4.5 that was available, but I'm pretty sure that the newer version will be out soon. (In fact, I think ACID Pro comes with it). For ACID, there's a free version called ACID Express, a version that is sold with different genre-styled packages (ACID Rock, ACID Latin...) and a slightly fuller-featured version called ACID Music, and finally ACID Pro. Version 3.0 is in beta right now and should be released pretty soon.

For more, including downloads of the free ACID version and the beta test copy of ACID 3.0, check out their website:

You should be able to download demo versions of both Acid and Sound Forge (albeit, stripped down versions, but nonetheless demos).

Plus, there is also a fast learning curve with Acid Pro.
