About Getting Started...

I apologize if this has been covered a billion times.
My goal is to be able to record jam tracks to burn to CDs as well as track my own songs(with as many tracks as I would need). I only need a listenable quality for now.
I already have a CD burner. I'm definately wanting to just use a program to start off.

I'm confused about how I should plug my guitar into the computer in the first place. I mean should I take any precautions or anything. Can it go straight into the PC? Can it come from just an amp into the PC? What connectors will I need if any? How should I do it?!
Also, if I just wanted to record with a mic, is that the only equipment I would need(and the program)?

Sorry guys but I need some beginners help in a severe way. Thanks for any replies.

If you want to get started right away, and just have a Soundblaster type of soundcard, then make sure you plug into the "Line in" rather than the "Mic in" jack. You'll need a preamp for your mic, and if its a condensor mic, you'll need one with phantom power.

Really, though, read The Guide, and then come back with whatever questions you have at that point.
 
Just NEVER plug a line from a speaker out (from an amp) to your PC, this is an almost guaranteed way to fry a soundcard. I also recomend the Tweakheadz site, there is lots of good info there. Most recording software has a trial or limited version which you can download and try it out to see which you prefer (some are a lot easier to get the hang of than others) before you buy. Thanks very much fo the link. It's a great site & although I hate all the reading, it seems to be a necessary & essential evil that I'll have to cope with. I'm completely new to computer recording & the only experience I have with home recording is a Tascam 4 & 8 track tape recorders.
I wasn't even going to bother with computer recording, but a friend of mine gave me his Cakewalk Guitar Tracks 2 CD. It doesn't have any instruction, so I guess I'll try to figure it out.
