I had thought that the 2488 tone generator drum pattern synthesizer restricted you to using one drum style (rock01, for example) within a song, and that you could only arrange the available patterns for that one syle.

Wrong-o! You can mix patterns from *any* of the available drum styles, within a single song. (There are, what - 80 or so styles, each with 6 preprogrammed patterns.....so what is that, 80 raised to the 6th power combinations?)

Fuck me, how am I going to going to document all those patterns?

Nothing like the burden of overchoice! :D

Thanks, RAMI - that's included in the tech reference manual.

What's not included is the patterns within all those styles. Each style includes 6 patterns:
--Intro
--Verse A
--Verse B
--Fill AB
--Fill BA
--Exit

...but each of these patterns differs from style to style. So the possible number of combinations is huge.

As perplexing as that sounds, I'm sure it's no where near as bad as dealing with an alcoholic drummer who misses practices and is always late for a gig! :o

Cheers! :)

Sorry Zaphod, I found it online and didn't realise it's in the manual. I don't think the whole drum pattern thing was well thought out and not user-friendly at all.

I dont want to burst anyones bubble here but eventually there will come a time to find that special little fill or roll and it wont be there.
Can you create your own patterns on the 2488?

You're not bursting my bubble. I don't use it for anything other than a click track. No, you can't program your own patterns, it's very limited.

..or the drummer who is too busy chasing pussy during breaks, and you have to track him down in the parking lot to start the next set..... :D

As RAMI said, you can't create your own patterns. You are limited to arranging pre-programmed patterns.

But with the multitude of patterns available, it would have been nice for some kind of cataloging beyond the styles. As it is now, you have to simply hunt through the styles and patterns one by one for something that you think you can use, and you better be taking notes when you do!

I think I will experiment with some completely random drum kits/patterns. Couldn't sound any worse than some of the R&B and hip-hop percussion I've been hearing.
