This song has a bass tone that I can't figure out. I've tried to replicate it with my gear using processors, pedals, effects, and a 5 string and I just can't find it. If any musical investigator's feel up to the task maybe you can go check it out and let me know if you have any ideas. The song is the key to gramercy park. It's on their media player. The song opens with the bass. Here's the link:

That's a crazy freakin sound! There's a setup on Guitar Rig 2 that's kind of like that...it models a bass signal that's split, one going straight to a DI, then the other going through an octaver and a fuzz, then to a bunch of different cab and mic models, then back to everything...

That sounds does sound like there's two signals there playing the exact same thing at all times, but only with different tones: one's fuzzy and octaved, and one's dry, or possibly one's fuzzy and one's clean with an octaver.

Either way, maybe just mess around with recording a dry bass track, then throwing on guitar rig or amplitude or something with all the mods on it, then see how that works...if you don't have any amp mod plugins, maybe just try splitting your signal and recording one clean track and one all messed up! Should be fun. Good luck!

Thanks for taking a swing. I put huge fuzz on a bass signal, but it made the sound waaaay to fat. Maybe ill double it with a clean signal

sounds to me like a distorted guitar that's been pitch-shifted down a shit ton

It's definitely a split bass signal, one through a fuzz or such, big muff for example, and the other clean, with possibly a light chorus (although I think it's something else, I'm just blank at the moment) for relief, not sure, experiment a little.

If not, go search on some Muse fansites, Chris the bass player uses this same effect and loads of fans know how to emulate it. You can hear many examples of this bass sound in their songs. Plug In Baby, some versions of Hysteria, like in this video... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7n9acRiUwY

So yeah, let me know what you find
Hope I helped.

its a fuzzy guitar dropped an octave listen to some of the other songs the sound is power chords

It's a double tracked split-bass signal. Sounds like distortion on one split, not fuzz. Other split sounds DI'd. Then double tracked and hard panned. Possibly a "Polish Love"? I can get close to that sound with mine.

I think you're on the right track.

It's a drop tuned guitar with an octave pedal and a ton of compression. There's a bass guitar that's super locked in with the guitars in there that doesn't have much attack to it and that is also super compressed and being masked by the guitars a bit. There's also a synth part doubling it. In some parts the synth is turned up louder than others.
Listening in headphones you can hear the bass guitar poke out here and there.

Yeah, you might be right. I wish we had a better quality sample to listen to. The bass is either doubled, or the guitar is. They throw some chugs in there on top of the octaved guitars that threw me a bit. The bass is pretty well covered up by the octaved guitars if that's whats going on. Makes no sense to me why guitarists would want to do that. It doesn't have the bite of a guitar, nor the power of a bass. Crazy. Of course, I feel that way about fuzz bass too......
