a Spacey, Funky instrumental

this is called "Funk-A-Fied"

it's the first tune that i've done with my newest (used) digital recorder.

i graduated (duh) from a 8 track machine to a 18 track......

all guitars and bass and keys through a Pod XT
 
GONZO-X, this is ultimate cool! I start to listen, and there's just layers and layers and layers and layers of sound, yet all of them have their own space. How do you write something like that? I guess that's a pointless question because if it can be taught I'd be able to do something like this, which I know will never happen.

layers, yeah, it's funny what going from 6 tracks to work with, up to 16 tracks will do to you!

it's really a bit of a departure for me...
and the general idea was to play lots of sparse parts, and make each one clean and different in tone and effect, so that they would stand out seperately.....
and then, of course, the mixdown decides where they sit left to right, and i tried to find each part it's very own spot......

The mix sounded very good to me.
The funky bass line was the highlight for me.
 
Great tune! The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the snare. Everything else was excellent! Great job!
 
Niiiiiice man! Whats the new recorder? ...Korg? This was really nice gonz, You do know how to make the most out of that xt. ...youve got some really nice tones in this, including the bass (which kinda surprised me). I loved the guitar panning in this, really worked well. ...hate to be redundant, cause im doing this alot today.... but, 5!

the bass WAS fun to play... i really winged it, which means i make mistakes, timing errors, stuff like that, but it really was just me trying to get used to this new recorder, so i figured what the hay.......i did do fingerstyle a little different than i normally do, which is to play more towards the bridge than i normally do, and i think this made it a little more punchy....

it's just a kit i selected, and a pre-done pattern, and i played odd hits and pieces as it was tracking........
i really need a good pc based drum program...... and write tempo maps, then go back and program for real...
this particular drum track is one that i spent the least amount of time on.... EVER!
it shows...........

the new recorder..... is a Roland VS-1880
it's 18 track, so i can do 16 tracks with no bounces (versus my old 6 tracks into 2 with 4 or 5 submixes....)

it helps to not have to commit to mixes so far in advance..... totally changes my engineering perspective now..... lots of re-learning to do.....

The bass tone......
all direct......
the bass path is bass>>PodXt>>Art DPS>>digital into VS......
the pod is setup for a "generic tube" amp model, with no speaker or mic.....
then, the eq is boosted lows, mid-level mids, low treble settings, and enough presence setting to bring out the clarity....
then, the LA2A compressor, set at about -11db with a +3db makeup, and then a touch of the "line 6 compressor" set about halfway on sensitivity and output.....

that signal hits the ART, and the vu's are pegging at 0db, so that's probably actually about +3db.... this adds a little more fatness with the additional distortion from the tube....
the voicing on the preamp section was set for neutral with over protection limiting......

then on mixdown, a little push in the deep lows, and a roll off above 2 khz......
 
I liked everything about this except for the ride cymbal.

yeah, the quick little snaps that happen a few times throughout the song, unfortunately are originating from a cpu clock speed/effects card timing issue......

they're pretty subtle, a lot of people never even heard them, but they are there.....

on the plus side, the sound i'm getting from the machine is better than it's predecessor, and so that's a good thing.....
i'm hoping to send the recorder back to the manufacturer and have them provide a hardware fix.

then, i'll be rolling!
 
Dude... totally Angelo Badalamenti. If Lynch is doing another movie anytime soon, he needs this song!

I can't offer any help on the mix... it sounds very well balanced, and as someone already stated, things have their own space, nothing walking on top of something else.

Mission accomplished.
