Yo!

Haven't been around much lately. Hope everyone celebrated the New Year with complete excess and total disregard to your health and the morning after.

I just finished this song, which is called "A Song". I would have posted this weeks ago, but I really wanted to come up with a spectacular title. :D :D :D

I changed my room around and realize I need a shitload more bass trapping. So, I did this mix under the new shittier conditions. I'd appreciate any help and comments on the mix.

Thanx!

A SONG

I like this tune!
Great vocals, guitars sound good overall the mix is a little thin.
Have you mastered this? seems a bit thin needs a bit of sparkle the drums are a bit dry.
The song structure is good.

Hey Muzza,

Thanx a lot for the listen and suggestions. You may be right. Like I said, I need more bass traps now. I walk around the room and the low end is really erratic. I kept turning down the bass and kik, and I still think they're too loud, but they might not be.

I'm surprised you say the drums sound dry, though. I record in a pretty live room and added more reverb while mixing. But I got no problem with making the drums bigger, so I'll see what others say about that.. :)

Thanx man.

Rami,

I love the vocal arrangement, cool song, groove matches the mood of the song very well. The bass is way light to what I hear, so I hope you work out your monitoring set-up. Really enjoyed the listen. Would you share your vocal mic and pre ? What is coloring the harmonies, I love the sound, very pleasing sound. Good job!

the balance is real good but it seems to be lacking low end thump. It does sound a little thin. Two things that jump out at me are that the bass guitar could go up and bring some more midrange into the vocal to fill it out. and the kick could move forward in the mix to.

RAMI,
A GOOD SONG.
The bass is a little light on for your recordings - plenty of definitions and it fattens up with chorus and is better thereafter but is still sans derriere if you will.
Terrific structure, your trademark cynical/clever lyrics.
Nothing to comment on really except the bottom end bass guitar & bass drum. -- I blame the room!

Thanx PDP. I just uploaded another version and brought up the bass and kik.

For the back vocals, there's only reverb and a slight delay on them. It's a 2 part harmony, with each part sung twice, that's about it. I sing into a AKG C3000b that goes straight into my TASCAM 2488.

Thanx jgh. :) Yup, I re-mixed it and broght up the kik and bass. Thanx a lot for the listen and the help.

I blame the room, too. :D It's making me doubt every decision I make concerning anything low-end. I did bring the bass and kik up, though they sound way too loud to me now. Hopefully, I'll get used to it. Got to get a bunch of fibreglass this week.

Thanx for all the help so far. There's a new version up, if you feel like listening to it.

Very good tune, Rami!
Really dig your harmonies. Really nice guitar work and the bass sounds defined, especially those nice funky parts in the verse. This has the traditional Rami sound and feel to it, especially the drums. Nice work!

I'm listeing to the last mix and it sounds good bass wise - especially towards the middle and end. The initial stage has excellent definition though so it's not lacking in that just not as full IMHO. BUT the mid/end is so much busier I wonder if it's just a build up of sonics that makes it sound louder. Kick is definitley there and sounds great as always... That guitar solo sounds smashing - new reverb/echo ?

I heard the latest mix also and agree with Ido, the bass is there, well defined, just not thumpin. Eh, but it's minor tweaks at this point.

I would like to hear the crashes a tad louder. What mic arrangement you use, jon glyns? just curious. Do you mic the hihat separately?

Good vox as always. I like how you panned the bgv's.

Cool,

Nice tune, man.. My initial thoughts are that the drums sound very dry, but that's pretty much the sound I've heard in all of your stuff. I've got used to it. The only reason I mention it now is that someone else did, and upon listening further, I realize your drums are wet enough, but the reverb tails are a bit long. The initial transient of your snare, for instance, doesn't seem very embellished by your reverb at all. The verb can create a pretty cool explosion, if it's just short plate-type, but very wet.

Anyway.. You probably already know that. Drums sound great, and bass performance is inspiring. I'm learning how to play bass better, and man, this was tight! Guitars sound a bit too far back in the mix, and if I had my druthers, I'd double or triple em'.

Another Rami classic!

I don't know if I'm interpreting your lyrics correctly, but if I am, I can totally relate.

I guess I'm hearing the newer mix, because it seems pretty balanced to me. It has that "Rami" sound all over it. I think the snare and kick are a little at odds with eachother. The kick is tight and in your face, but the snare has more of a roomier sound to it. A little more consistency there would be good I think. The guitars have a nice raunchy crunch to them. Bass thumps along nicely. Vocals are smooth and balanced. Pretty dang good for a new mix in a new room.

Thanx Ido. No, no new delays or verbs. But I did put the guitar through a different "head".

Cool,
Thanx Chil. Yes, I use Glyn Jons, sort of, but I don't mic the hi-hats. I might bring the overheads up a bit, I also thought it could use a bit more.

Thanx man. The rythm guitars are doubled. I'll play around with different reverbs. I have a lot of verb on those drums, but maybe not the right kind.

Thanx Greg. I'm actually in the same room, but I changed where my desk is. It's now where it should be, shooting down the length of the room and I'm about 1/3 in. But it seems that being in the right place exposed how much bass trapping I really need.

As far as the kik, your ears come through again. It's the first time I trigger a kik sample. I don't know what happened to my kik, but I brought my kit home from a gig, and when I recorded the drums for this song, I liked the track, but my kik sounded like crap and I couldn't get it to snap and thump. So, I tried a demo of Drum-a-gog. I actually love the kik sound I'm triggering, but I also hear it a little disjointed from the rest of the kit (I was hoping nobody else would notice :D ). I'm going to try giving it more reverb to match everything else.

As far as the title and lyrics:
hahaha, I listened again, pretty sure I'm getting this too, clever.
I'm not sure if there's much to get. I guess the "message" is that I'm never going to write something that's never been said before, and I'm not going to blow you away with any deep Shakespearian deepness. But it doesn't matter because it's only a song...don't take it so seriously.

Something like that. :)

I thought it meant sumptn else. .

Well, it means whatever you want it to mean. That's the beauty of a song. Now I'm curious what you heard, because maybe it's what I meant without knowing it.

I thought it meant sumptn else. :(

Not me. :)

That's exactly what I thought it meant. I'm in the same "It's just a song" boat. It's just a song. Don't get all worked up over it.

Haha, that's funny. I'm glad my ears still work. Like I said, that kick sound aint bad at all, it just doesn't totally jive with the space of the rest of the kit. A little reverb might fix it right up. It probably stuck out to me a little more because I've listened to lots of your songs very closely. I listen to your CD pretty regularly.
