I have an old piano here at home, but many of its notes aren´t quite on the spot tuning wise, to say the least, and getting a good sound from it would problably cost me quite the frustration. Since I have my midi keyboard up and running I was wondering if there isn´t a good grand piano simulator out there? Any recommendations?

Steinbergs "The Grand" is supposed to be top notch. It's a little spendy but again, it is supposed to sound really good.

NYMorningstar gave you better advice than I did. My piano tech charges $85 for a tuning. If you have a bit of extra cash, go ahead and tune the piano. Even if it ends up that your not getting the recording quality your looking for, you can still invest in a vsti/sample and you have a piano in your house that is in tune and is fun to play on and and sounds good, all of that for under $100.

Tuning it is certainly on the schedule but there is no piano tuning service here in town and the good folks in the big city are waiting for more clients before they can haul their ass over here.

Steinbergs The Grand seems like a mighty fine program, although a bit expensive.

Why would you not do it yourself? A simple chromatic tuner, or if your lucky enough to own a nice strobe tuner, would suffice. Piano tuner keys are cheap.

I don´t know, I always thought it was a hazzle but maybe I should try it out just for the hell of it...

I'm kinda just relaying my boss's feelings on this one....so..here goes....

He's had Steinberg's The Grand for a while now.....but since its a memory hog....he didn't like it that much and didn't use it...so after he got a new PC (I switched him over..haha), I installed it for him and he didn't quite like the sounds anymore compared to his Yamaha P-300 keyboard which he was running his piano sounds off of. Then he got the Best Service Steinway 5.1 and even tho he only uses the stereo files..he finds it be much better than The Grand and even enough that he took his P-300 home. He also got the East/West Symphonic Orchestra Silver Edition which also comes with a Steinway grand..and he even likes that one over The Grand.

I must say....The Grand's sounds don't sound so "grand". I'm not a piano player.....but they jsut sound kinda thin to me. The Steinway ones I've mentioned sound like real Steinway's (so says my boss...) and generally sound amazing. They do have a little latency during monitoring/recording but not during playback.

Just my two cents..

mda piano VSTi !!

Ok, I'm not really an expert on piano's but I use 'mda piano'. It's a VSTi, modelled around 31 carefully sampled and mastered Piano samples. It sounds like the real thing to me. You should at least give it a try since it's free!

I have The Grand, and I'm very, very happy with it. It's a really full, natural sound. Not bright enough for pop/dance style piano, but sounds great on any classical or soft song.
