How do you have your YSM1P's situated?

Horizonally?
Vertically?

If horizonally, at what point of the monitor do you try to align ear-height?
If vertically, at what point of the monitor do you try to align ear-height?

I think I've had mine too low and have been hearing too much of the tweeter. If I raise them it seems I might more accurately hear the lows...?
I'm putting together some PVC monitor stands, and am trying to determine their height...

Thanx.

hellooooo-o-o-o-o-o-o--o--o--o--o--o ---o---o ---o---o

monitor stands diy

don't have the yorks...but was looking at doing the same stands.

logically you may want to keep them on the shorter side, an inches, for any padding or rubber feet... just a thought.... on the DIY stands.

also i saw, if you have a router..you could just route the cirlce where the PVC goes and glue into your wooden top and bottom pieces....

save another $6 on these stands. but geez their already what $15 for a pair!
not including sand and paint.

my reads, understanding is the tweets are at ear level as they have the clearer stereo image. the bass is bouncing around everywhere doing bad things.

Thanks for that.

I already bought the flanges, they were only a buck a piece (having had my router stolen quite a long time ago anyway...).
I couldn't find regular ol' sand, so I bought some pretty blue sand to be sealed up for eternity and never again seen :D Cost about $3 for 20lb...

Also, I could only find 5 ft. lengths of the PVC, so had to buy two. Was hoping they came 8ft. so I could saw it in half...

The YSM1P manual says nothing about placement as far as relative height...
Guess I'll be putting the tweets at ear level as you suggested.
Thanks again...

PVC monitor stands

i'm going right now to get the tubes.
but i'll have them saw it in the store...

2 pcs. 35", with top and bottom at 1" total... thats about 36".
Speakers are 15" with tweeters at 13"...so about 48" from floor to my ear level.

these stands will drop off some table top reflections..right off the start...
and make some table space... damn $1 each for a flange, thats good..
the ones here are $3! each thats $12 in flanges...

screw flanges are better than glue for future modifications, no doubt there.

DIY..love it. a good day out too.

I've got mine on their sides but I've been warned by folks in the know that it's a bad idea (phase smearing). Personally, they sound great to me so there they stay.

For near-fields, IN GENERAL - with more exceptions than the U.S. tax code :o ...

High frequencies are more directional with poorer dispersion, so for mix accuracy you want to have the tweeters at ear level generally pointed in towards the ears, but you'll also want to play back with your ears off-axis to make sire they still sound good.

Low frequencies are less directional with much wider dispersion, so their level in regard to the ears is not as critical. However, they are more succeptable to both physical coupling to the desk (which is why it is ofteh *generally* recommended to either place the monitors on physically isolating material or on isolated stands) and to near-field reflections and phase noding off of the desk surface.

For the later low freq reflection situation, you'd have to expiriment and see what works best for your environment. Before I got my 824s I was using some Klipsch two-ways on stands that worked best for me by actually standing the speakers upside down. That way the tweeters were more in line with my listening position and the woofs had better clearance and a higher incidence of angle to my old desk, making the bass cleaner and tighter. However, when I got my 824s and new high-density desk, I have them mounted vertically (normally) on the overbridge wings (with acoustic isolation between the wings and the overbridge surfaces), and they work and sound great. (Many will say that putting near-fields on a desk overbridge is a Bozo-No-No. That is the general theory, but in my acoustical sitution that is a bunch of hooey.)

I'd actually try the 824s sideways, as right now the tweets are just above my ear's level, but with two computer monitors and a video monitor in the center of the overbridge, I just don't have the room. Beside, It works great for me the way they are, so I am reticent to "fix" what doesn't sound "broke" ;) I bring that up to make a completly non-technical but pertenant point: Most nearfield speaker positioning vertical vs. horizontal is - rightly or wrongly - done as a matter of practicality more than a matter of anal acoustic perfection. More times than I care to admit I have been in installations where they had their monitors set vertical or horizontal for line of sight reasons or visual asthetics and not because of a major difference in sound. I don't for a millisecond advocate doing that, but it's a good thing to keep in mind next time you're paging through a copy of Mix and noticing that studio X has their nearfields laying on the X axis and studio Y has them on the Y axis. It's not always because they put a lot of acoustical thought into it.

My desk setup has me sitting about 24-30" back from my computer monitor with the YSM1P's about 10" away from the monitor but 3" towards me angled about 45 degs. toward my head. Tweeters are about ear height. That's my sweet spot, move a little if I need to hone it in...

so what was your final $$ total? any pics?

i think i got in a mess... one dumbass said the price was like $1.80 for both pvc columns...

the front desk the guy charged triple that!! like $5..said thats what it rrang up as??

so the ultimate dumbass was me, as i paid it after questioning...
but something didn't add up. i might take em back.

in all reality, there are black painted metal off the shelf stands, adjustable, for $79.

so a DIY with pvc better not come close financially, imo. total cost ~$10-20pair i'm thinking? that includes paint and screws and every thing!

i think a thread only screw. 35inches is $1 eac stand, so that would be cheaper than flanges ($3.89 each!!) and still allow disassembly.

roughly and without tax

2/5 ft. section of PVC @ $6.99= $14
Closet/toilet flanges 4@ $1= $4
2/20lb. bags of sand @ $3.50=$7
PVC cleaner and cement= $5
Wood old shelving at work $0

Already had caulk/screws/misc.

About $30 for two...

The damned sand I bought is wet, it's been sitting out on the porch in the sun all day.

I'm not sealing the top/shelf so they can be disassembled (when I move... eventually) and so that they can be swiveled.
I also made the bases approx 15" for extra stability.

I'm wondering if these should be filled full of sand?

Would the added mass reduce vibrations?

If nothing else, the sand will increase stability by lowering the center of gravity of the stand/monitor combo. A couple of feet of PVC pipe, a base and a top simply are not going to weigh that much. Put a monitor on top and you'll have a very top-heavy construction. Plus one in which the top part will be vibrating around pumping out the bass. All in all, even with a somewhat wide base, that would be a situation I would not want to trust more than I had to. Put the sand (or rocks, or lead weights, etc.) in at least part way and you'll shift the center of gravity down and greatly add to the stability.

2nd that..add some weight..you may want to wait until your sand is dry tho...
mildew can smell quite nasty after a few weeks of mildewing. :p

i think the "spikes" can really help keep the bass in the speaker cabinet. this makes logical sense to me.

un-like speaker wire...$5500 speaker wire or the $4.98 stuff...

or gold plating??
gold plating is often only 1 micron or 10,000 angstroms thick...
thats about the thickness of a human hair!
thats how much gold is plated onto most connectors!!
...then transferred back to standard brass/copper wire??

i bought some new 16awg speaker wire while i was at the store...nice black/white with a thick rubber cover... 38cents foot. replaced some lamp wire 10cents/ft...
i didn't hear any difference...

check out the tips...and the $1300 speaker wire! daang. i'll bet the $1300 speaker wire would sound great!!

I have them filled with sand approx. half-way.

The sand dried pretty well today, I'm leaving the tops open over night, and I'll see how dry it is tomorrow. Very humid out today, so hopefully inside w/air cond. on, it may dry a little faster.

tubular

my two tubes are sitting in the backseat. i re-checked the frkn receipt...they had 3"...Super wall or some sht...

i had 4" tube and standard crap.... what a bunch of sht.

anyway, i'll probably router out the fkn things ...i went to 2 places and the flangers are like $3.89 each!! damn... I didn't want to spend $50....

i'm pissin away cash, should have left the piggy bank alone and kept focused on the BW601 s3's... its amazing, $25 here, $50 there...next thing you know it s $250... three weeks later !!

could 'of had 1/2 pair of the BW's!

just ranting...excuse me while i go stare at my pvc tubes.

Yorks and DIY stands

so i went and finshed the stands tonight. just to close it out.

went white. grabbed some scrap lumber and left over paint.

in the end, i went back to paying the $12 for flanges.
On a positive note, when i get my 601's.. i'll need the stands and so the flanges will allow easy change out to a bigger platen piece if needed.

Total:
$8.38 for two pieces of PVC
$12.44 for four flanges

screws, scrap lumber, and white paint, rocks ...in the garage
Just an Estimate-
$1 screws
$4 paint
$4 Home Depot 7x9 and base 12x12

~$30 pair ..... i'd guess, same as what you mentioned.

might add some DIY spikes tho? :)

Mine are finished. Filled nearly completely with sand.

Now I have to dig out the space for them, removing the table/shelf they (monitors) used to sit on, sorting through all of the disused lyrics/manuals/etc., sweeping dusting and chasing off spiders.

DIY spikes?
