I walk the line
since you have an Epiphone Texan, too, what mics/pres and placement do you use or prefer?

Actually, I PMed him a looong time ago, and he didn't respond

Why not just send him a PRIVATE message?

and because he has said before that he doesn't like PMs. I don't know why exactly, and it's really none of my business. He is perfectly within his rights to not respond to PMs, just as he is perfectly within his rights not to share the information I've requested, although I imagine he will. And yes, this way everybody gets to hear the answer. I don't know whether or not they'd be interested, which is why I PMed in the first place.

I'm only asking him because he has an acoustic that I assume is almost exactly like mine, and I respect his opinion. I sure wish (no pun intended) he'd sell me that sm-82(?) I think it was, the ENG mic. Damn, I need that!

I know that some think they are cheesy mics but I have had good luck recording both of my acoustic Epiphones with an MXL 990 about 18 inches in front and a little above the guitar. I don't use it for all guitars but my Epiphones seem to like it. I don't use it for fingerpicking though. Hope this helps, DAve.

What kind of Epi and what kind of pre?

and you say not for fingerpicking, so I assume that means rhythm? And what do you use for fingerpicking?

Alright. That works. I didn't know that he didn't like PMs.

Sorry. :)

Hello! First, I have no problems with emails or PM's. Cardioid- I *did* respond to your PM, but it looks like you didn't get my response. I will see if it is still in some dead file and try again. It's not true. I love PM's, but it's easier to just email me at richard_monroe@earthlink.net or richie@bardwire.com.
As far as the Epiphone Texan, no, I don't own one, and never have. I do own a PR725S dreadnought, which I bought new for about $300 in 1980. It was my main acoustic for years. Now, it is my camping/travel/ sort of expendable axe. I confess, I don't use it for recording, as the Taylor 710CE blows it away. Also, the PR725S is a true dreadnought, not the rounded shoulder version of the Texan. As such, it is probably a little more boomy. Spruce top, rosewood back and sides, tuners by Mickey Mouse Inc.
As far as what mics I use to mic up an acoustic, it depends on the axe and the material. I'm sorry that I am not going to rattle off a bunch of cheap mics. Simple- AKG C414B-ULS, bass cut engaged, on the 11th fret, into an Avalon AD2022. No EQ, no compression, nada.
Not as simple- 2 Neuman KM184's X-Y, about 3 feet out, into the Avalon, and B.L.U.E. Kiwi, in omni, over the right shoulder, into Joemeek twinQ, iron switch on,phase reversed, no EQ, no compression, nada. As far as cheap mics and pres for acoustic, most of the ones I've tried sucked. I've had my best luck with AKG C2000B into an M-Audio DMP-3. Best of luck.-Richie

Hmmmm....

well, while I try to figure out if I've had too many drugs in my youth, or whether I need to start taking them again (Rx this time, no doubt) as I dig through my old emails & saved threads, did you ever, at any time, record the Epi, and if you did, what was the most successful setup you used for it.

Also, what was that ENG mic again? And if you say that wasn't you, I guess I'll go check myself in somewhere.

Not me- I have never used any ENG mic, to the best of my knowledge. Check your PM's. I sent you a new improved answer.-Richie

Quite frankly I don't own a mic I'm happy with for fingerpicking the Epiphones. I use a different guitar for those songs. Sorry I couldn't help. Dave
