A Meaningful Mic Pre "Shootout"

Dammit, Jim, Shut Up!
I'd like to put together comparison of different pre's I have. My idea is to find three sound sources and sample them all through different pre's, using one mic, identically placed for each source. I'd try to match levels on input and not use any comps or EQ's that any pre might have--just the straight signal.

First, would this be a waste of time?

If not, what sources would reveal the weaknesses of a pre amp the most? (shaken percussion, acoustic guitar, voice, handclaps, etc?)

Last, would anybody find this interesting to hear?
 
That would be very interesting to hear.

If possible, I would try it out on a mini-mix - maybe a voice, guitar, and/or piano. If possible/practical, that is.
