A little latency and vst instrument problem.

Hey guys,
Im having a little trouble with latency, and vst instrments loading.

First off im using Cubase 5, with a Line 6 toneport Ux2.
My computer is a dell xps 8100, Intel i7, 8gb DDR RAM and a 1.5TB hard drive. its only a month old.
Ive just been messing around in Kontakt with alacias keys, And I keep getting crackles and stuff and the CPU meter in Kontakt says its overloading, in task manager it says the CPU is running at 12% max. I dont get it!!! also latency as about 18ms with a buffer of 512, if I set it at 128 it goes to 8ms which is ok. but wont that conflict with the audio quality? and since I use both audio and MIDI on every track. it will be a bit annoying having to change the buffer every 2 seconds. Is there anything you can suggest? Not meaning to sound really stupid but I spent quite a bit of money on this computer and I just want it to run smoothly like it should.

Hmmm. 18ms latency with buffer size set to 512 is definitely on the high side. On my Aardvark Pro Q-10, 512 buffer setting gives me around 5-6ms latency at 48kHz and around 7ms at 44.1kHz. What sample-rate are you using? I'd see if there are driver updates for the Toneport.

From your specs, I am assuming you're running 64-bit OS? Is this Windows 7?

If I am not mistaken Kontakt is not multi-core/multi-cpu aware, so while your overall CPU may be running at 12%, you maybe overloading one of the CPU cores, which is not unheard of.

In any case, NI recently released Kontakt 4.1 update. Download it, install it, and see if that makes things better.
 
Yeah im running 64bit windows 7. cheacked all the drivers before I posted they are all up to date, Ive set it up to 24 bit and sample rate of 44100. I looked on Kontakt's options and I saw that its running on all 8 cores (I can change how many cores it utilizes) And its updated as far as 4.5 as i needed that to run alecias keys. Is it just a problem with my sound card or can it be realated to the MIDI connetions, Ive got a digital piano connected via usb and a beringer bcf2000 connected via MIDI-USB. I also experience a high amount of ASIO time usage/cpu when just haveing about 6 tracks with no plugins on cubase. Ive just moved over from a laptop that was 2gb RAM and a 2.2 core duo and that ran it better. Anything I can try? I think it should all run without a problem?

Just to be sure, are we talking about full Kontakt or Kontakt Player?

If it is full Kontakt, please double check the version info. I think you mean 4.0.5. Version 4.1 just came out on June 1st.
 
Another thing. Are you having issues only with Cubase 5 + Kontakt? Have you tried Kontakt as a standalone? What about Cubase with other VSTs?

Like I said though, 18ms latency is a lot when buffer size is 512. I doubt that would be caused by MIDI issues, as ASIO and MIDI are (supposed to be) independent of each other. In fact, go ahead and uplug your MIDI devices from the computer and see if that makes a difference. I doubt it will.

I was asking that to see if it would make any difference going out and buying a low latency MIDI interface. Kontakt is ok, I suppose its mainly a cubase problem, It sounds like there is a cpu overload, like when you have too many tracks with two many plugins, but happens when it really shouldnt be a problem. Could it be a problem with my audio interface? would it be worth investing in a new one? Im used to everything working fine, so I struggle a bit when I run into difficulties

To clarify, there is no such thing as a "low latency MIDI interface". The latency you experience is an audio interface issue. And it's not as simple as getting a new interface. There are lots of things to contribute and not the least of which would be the chipset on your motherboard.

I'd say call Line 6 tech support and see if they have heard of the same issues concerning your computer/software combination.
 
I have just got a trouble shooting list for audio dropouts, so will try out all the things listed there. as they also relate to the settings that inpact latency. and see how that works out. then I can send the report back to Line 6. From what I have read there have been a few issues with the drivers on windows 7.
