I checked the 3440 service manual and the sync head freq response is 50hz - 6khz, which is narrow indeed, measured at 0db, 15ips and is the same measured at -10db, 7 1/2ips 
. The playback head is rated from 40hz - 22khz, 0db, 15ips and same at -10db, 7 1/2ips. I expect the high frequencies to be even higher when measured at -10db, 15ips. Obviously, the lower the level you record at, the better the higher frequencies, although S/N ratio suffers but that's fine.
