Maybe it is worth mentioning what a software vocal eliminator does.

It works on the presumption that the vocal track is a mono track that was mixed dead center in the stereo.

So the vocal eliminator tries to eliminate any wave that is exactly the same on both sides of the stereo. However that process is not entirely foolproof. Splitting the stereo signal back into its representative sounds is not precise, the vocals may not have been mixed dead center and other instruments might also have been mixed dead center. For example the drums might be mixed dead center to give the impression of them being in the center behind the singer. No vocals...no drums.

Obviously the process would also be worthless on old monophonic recordings.

Yah thanks for the insight. Course im at a loss on most of that technical stuff but I can understand how the stereo signals are mixed. Hmm now I dont kno if I should get one or not lol. That one elimator was actually pretty expensive around $2400. I guess if I cant find any instumentals for the bands I want then Ill have now choice but to try one. Anyone kno where I could find instrumentals/karaoke for bands like Greenday, RollingStones, Transplants, alt./punk rock etc...?

yah its fun huh? Well my budget is pretty flexiable although id like to keep it as low as possible. Under a grand would be great but if nothing else i was actually thinking about trying that vocal eliminator. Ill try the MSN thing though for backgrounds. Thanks... Somebody also reccomended the cheapy Behringer Modulizer Pro which sounds promising. any more suggestions ie: vocal eliminators or intrumentals sources?

OK guys thanks for all that helped! Well im pretty much set on trying that Beringher Modulizer Pro, It uses the same concept for vocals removals as the other one but costs about 2300 less. As far as the instrumentals well I can only find like the hit singles for most bands such as greenday, which i will probalby buy for the quality factor, but if anyone knows a good source for instrumentals or even a custom instrumentals workshop, please let me know. Other than that my next post will probaly be on how to get my Beringher modulizer to work right So thanks again for all your help I learned alot.

hey, i have an aiwa stereo with an option that says "karaoke". im not sure what it does but it removes the lyrics. so i just plug it into my PC and record the track in cool edit or something and then the vocals.

First off... some of you guys need to lighten up and get the log outta your asses... why waste your time posting if your not gonna help someone? especially if your such pro's at this stuff should you be pressed for time recording people instead of giving them crap?

Second of all, your gonna probably want Pro Tools Mbox.. it's under 500 bucks and it has the computer software, a mic pre amp built in, you can add compression and stuff through pro tools on your computer and take out stuff. Thats probably your best bet and the most bang for your buck. Another way is to get a digital four track recorder for about 300.00 a Mic Pre amp Presonus BlueTube is pretty good 149.99 and a behringer Composer (compressor and limiter) 89.99 and download cakewalk or something off kazaa. but you should buy it to get all the features.

First of all... please don't double post... you can easily delete the second post by going in there and clicking delete this post...

Second of all... MBox will be an overkill for what this person wants to do... create a simple recording of them singing a song over a backing track. If this person wants to use Pro Tools, he would better off downloading ProTools Free of the digidesign web site, and that would surfice... you are mentioning a lot of gear that if this user just wants to do a basic recording would possibly be an overkill..

applesmasher, the Behringer Modulizer Pro is an effects unit, you will still need to record the source onto something... what are you planning on using? Computer I'm guessing... do you have a sound card, if so, which card?

Oh, and OnTheBlackRock, please don't suggest that people download software off kazaa because the will come back here with problems that relate to problems caused by the 'crack' in the software as opposed to the software.

The whole story is, that these days, there are sooo many ways to do a simple recording. You just have to work out which is easiest and what will get the best results from what you want to do (or can do).

Yah i want to keep the price really low now. That Behringer modulizer pro has alot of effects, costs under $100., and most importantly has a remove vocals function which is why im interested in it. But beyond that, no I dont have any mics or good sound cards yet. I still have to figure that out. Its all so confusing just to do a simple thing like recored vocals on a background lol. Ill probally be posting alot more just to get everything working. I kno i have a soundcard, but its nothing special, just came with my dell. Thanks for that extra advice though.
