Here's a work-in-progress..... if Rokket redoes the bass line, I'll update the mix with it....

I got sidetracked by the spousal unit last night, but I will have something up be tonight, that's a promise.

And I have to agree with BentRabbit -- great vocals, Ruth!

Thank You. I tried hard. By the way, your mix sounds great!

OK.. here's where I'm at with my humble mix...

My ears are getting tired... Let me know what you hear...

:)

Once again a kickass mix! :D

How did you get the vocal levels so consistent?

Secret sauce my friend, secret sauce.... (and no, it's not "slammin" compression!!!) ;)

Seems my troubles with intonation are much deeper than I thought. Even getting the octave at the 12th fret intoned, I am still sharp on almost every note up the fretboard... any guitar tech types have any help they can throw my way?

I guess someone else is going to have to track this bassline... I can forsee being out of action for a bit and not being of much help until I can get this fixed... SHIT!

I am going to post this little problem in the guitar forum and hope I get some help...

Bruce and his secrets...

OK... It looks like the only way we're going to be able to solve the mystery of his mixes is to resort to more clandestine measures... Here's what we need to do:

We'll make a large wooden badger....

Damn... Sorry to hear that....

Any guitar shops over there? Can this be fixed short of replacing the bass?

:(

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm... wooden badger.....!!

ROFLMAO!!!

ok - for that laugh, here's what I did to Ruth's vocals:

Editing (Inside Cubase):
Various cuts/edits of misc noises/hiss on the track itself.... a bit of coloration using "Da Tube" plug-in to draw out the softer phrases and also put a slight edge on the harder phrases.... high-pass at 70Hz, +3dB@800Hz for a bit of lo-mid impact......

Mixing (HD24 -DMXR100):
A bit of top-end +3dB@12KHz.... a bit more lo-end +3dB@200Hz... a mid cut -2dB@1.3KHz to remove a slight wooliness...... and a bit of on-board limiting (only 1-2dB cap)... the rest was good old-fashioned fader-riding...... (could have automated it, but didn't bother this time.....)

Well, there is the language barrier that I have to get around. I am married to a Filipina, and I am still learning Tagalog, so I never learned to get beyond a standard greeting in Japanese. And I don't even know where to start looking. I've found a few places that sell instruments, but I don't know if I could find a tech.... I posted this problem in the guitar forum... Hopefully I can find an answer beyond getting rid of the bass. She's my girlfriend, you know.. :(

I guess I just don't hear a real problem in the bass! I think your bass line rocks!

One suggestion that someone gave me, that I haven't ever tried, is to put a match stick next to the nut on the neck. I don't know what that is suposed to do but it could warrent an experiment.

Bruce,
Not to pry for more of your special "recipes" but what did you do with the snare drum in your mix, it sounds amazing. I'm really strugging to get a good, crisp "crack" sound without killing the resonance of the drum.

A little update:

I'd like to wrap this mix contest up by Thurday of next week because I will be going to Hawaii on vacation or it won't finish until I get back 10 days later. What do you think?

That one's not a secret -- I replaced the snare drum with one of Farview's Rock Drum Drumagog samples.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! Performance wise, I am happy with it. But once it's brought out properly in the mix, I can hear that it's slightly off.

A matchstick won't help me, as it's a combination of the age of the strings and a slight bow in the neck that I need to flatten out. I guess I have to search the cushions on the couch and find some spare change and get another set of strings...

Bastard!:D

I just spent another hour or so messing with it because "If Blue Bear can do it, so can I" LOL

Oh well, hopefully the mix is better now for the effort

Did you drumagog the toms and kick too?

Well, here's my work in progress....

Things I was unsure about:
1. Vocals: Too wet? I didn't seem to fit in well with less, maybe too much 'verb on everything?

2. Bass: Fighting the room on this one, I erred on the side of caution and mixed the bassline pretty low (I think)

3. Too much high boost on the guitars? I wanted to bring out the pick sound, maybe overdid it.

4. Kick too clicky? Couldn't really hear the kick in the mix without it, but again that could be the room I'm working in.

Alright enough excuses, pick it apart folks.
