Rokket, sharp on all strings, or just one? Can you adjust the trussrod? Are the strings riding pretty high over the frets? Sometimes one, or more, of these can be adjusted to fix intonation problems.

Well, here's my work in progress....



Things I was unsure about:
1. Vocals: Too wet? I didn't seem to fit in well with less, maybe too much 'verb on everything?

2. Bass: Fighting the room on this one, I erred on the side of caution and mixed the bassline pretty low (I think)

3. Too much high boost on the guitars? I wanted to bring out the pick sound, maybe overdid it.

4. Kick too clicky? Couldn't really hear the kick in the mix without it, but again that could be the room I'm working in.

Alright enough excuses, pick it apart folks.

I'd say the bass is mixed too low. Drums seem subdued a little. I like the little swell you added during the rest between verses.

It's sharp on all of them. Even after the 12th fret is in tune. I need a new set of strings and have to adjust the truss rod. I already got that advice from the guitar forum. It's still going to be awhile until I can record it.


So please, will a bass player step up to the plate and record this? Her song deserves to be done properly.

Well... There's actually an easier solution... No need to complicate things if we don't have to...

It basically means bringing us all to Hawaii with you while we finish our mixes and then you can....

Hey thanks for the listen. Cool song BTW.
I gave it the "morning after listen" and realized immediately the bass is way too low. I think I'm going to back off on the verb for the vocals too, especially during the intro part before the drums/bass kick in.
When you say "subdued" do you mean they're buried? I've been A-Bing mine with Bruce's mixe and noticed he mid-scooped the guitars quite a bit more. I'll see if that brings the drums up a little more.

Actually no -- I did almost nothing to the guitars -- just a touch of high-shelf for air, and lo-cut at 100Hz.....

Huh, cool. Sounds less muddy than mine, maybe just the high shelf and mixed lower. Thanks.
 
anyone notice that the first couple bars on the guitar sound somewhat similar to that Silverchair song that first made them famous, i think it was called "tomorrow". Or maybe I'm just not remembering the Silverchair right....it's been awhile.
 
I got my bass' intonation fixed. Should I retrack it? I want to, but if everyone is making the other one work, should I bother?

It's up to you -- if you redo it, I'll remix my version.... even with my pitch shifting, it still wasn't exactly on-pitch!

No, no, it was good that this happened. I needed to redo the action and a few other things anyway, and I was putting it off because it's a pain in the ass. This just got me to do it, that's all.

Basically, I had to restring it, get it in tune, then adjust the truss rod because I had almost 1/4" between the strings and the 12th fret, so the neck was bowed pretty bad. Then I had to set the intonation. It was all pretty painless, in reality, and it needed to be done. Now I am set! I just want to give the strings more time to stretch out so that she will stay in tune, and I will retrack the bass line.
 
Bruce, how much editing did you do to the bass line? I noticed that it didn't kick in where I had tracked it, so should I play it the same or would it fit better to record it like your edit?

I had to tweak a couple of parts here and there to tighten it up with the drums (some parts just didn't lock with the kick... and I also lengthened the sustained note at the end of the song (to get a nice fade) -- you had cut it off just a couple of seconds too soon....

Not many edits, just tightening! ;)

OK... I had noticed that the little kick/cymbol part was taken out in the beginning of the song. I haven't listened to see if he has taken that out in the new drum mix, so I don't really know if you did that or if it was a change that he'd made. Anyway, I will retrack it soon.
