Dude, I diggin your mix. I really like the drum sounds, care to share the drum signal chain? :D

Well basicly probly not what your expecting. lol. I don't really follow rules at all. All the cymbal tracks were put into a BUS by themselves with a small room reverb applied to them, then that was bussed to the "drum" bus which includes the cymbals, toms, kick, snare, etc. On the drum bus I used a PSP mix saturator to bring some warmth and sizzle to the drums. I also used a bit of compression on the drum bus to give them so body. On kick, I didnt do too much EQing except for a little presence bump at about 5K or so. I also used the Mix Saturator on the kick for some added fatness. On snare, I basicly cut a bit out of 100hz and boosted some in the 4K region. I compressed the snare at about 5:1 with roughly a -28db threshold and the attack set at about 30ms with an automatic release. Then on toms I basicly did nothing but use the mixsaturator again and boosted some presence EQ on the tracks. And as a final not I applied a little hall type reverb on the entire drums buss to give it some depth. That's about it.

Phheew. lol.

Well, patched up a few of the problems with my mix - pretty happy with it now - a few minor things I'd like to automate.

Any comments? :)

Only one: this mix sounds the most realistic in terms of a 5-piece band being able to reproduce it on stage. My hat is off to you sir, and your great mix.

Gunnar, this is as close to my original vision as any I've heard on here. Bruce still has the best mix of all the guitars, but I agree with Chuck (Lurk_R), this version could be played on stage without too much trouble. Nice work.

And thank you so much for the use of your server, again! :D

Ok, I need to poke my head in here. This mix was done in about an hour or so. It isnt quite perfect but I believe it's pretty close. The drums actually sound pretty damn good to me, at least the way I mixed them. Give 'er a listen.

And Scrubs.....I AM DEFFINATELY still going to do those drums for you man, I've just been more backed up than you would believe, and my places I can record have been really limited.

BTW, PLEASE forgive me if deep linking is not allowed. Don't wanna get in trouble with the Geetster. :D

cool, man. mix sounds good.

I EXPECT FEEDBACK BITCHES!!

I just wanted to bump this up and say this is quickly becoming one of my favorite mixes of this tune. My first listen was on laptop speakers, but now that I've listened on a few systems, I'm liking it even more. You managed to cram the bulk of the guitar tracks in there and everythings seems to be sitting very well. Very strong work, kid.

Mine too...

I wanted to play the song to some local folks to show 'em what can happen via the Internet, and this was the mix I selected for them to hear...

I've liked what you've done in the PMC's also...

Bravo!

:D

I don't know if it's too late to get something in here or not but I thought I'd try anyway...

I put this together in a couple of hours....I didn't modify anything, just left the tracks original.

So fire away.... :)

Well here's my half-hour's worth.
I did this on my laptop... no outboard gear available unfortunately.

Test Mix #1

Also did it on the laptop's speakers :o so i can assume the bass (which was essentially inaudible) probably has some level issues.

Anyways... any critiques are appreciated.

Thanks again.

I agree with that.
Great mix, NL5. It portrays a bit more reality than any of the other mixes, as far as having a realistic soundstage and feeling.

Good job.

Gotta admit, I liked NL5's the best as well. Blue Bear's was sonically brilliant, but the feel of NL5's was the closest to what I was hearing in my head.

THANK YOU!!!

It wasn't about what was "realistic" or could be reproduced on stage. It was about the FEEL of the song. While I agree Bears mix was technically superior to mine, the feel of the song gets lost in the 324,873 layers of guitars.

When I listened to the lyrics, I pictured a guy sitting on the edge of his bed with his head down - hands to his head. Feeling dark, cold, and "naked" (figuratively, not literally) - agonizing over his "problem". I just tried to make the song fit that mood - most of us have been there. To me, Purge nailed that feel perfectly. :)

he could have been for all we know. :D

Nice song guys.

I took delivery of my first 'music' computer the other day (been using a KorgD16 for a while now) and I loaded up your tracks to start learning my new set up.

So, this mix was done in a couple of hours & at each stage it was a 'first' for me i.e. first import audio, first 'add a plugin' first I wonder what the eq sounds like! You get the picture. Anyway, my mix sucks but I learned a lot about my new system & had some fun with the arrangement of some of the tracks.

Hope the MP3 conversion & the Nowhere Radio upload thingy works.

I'll go & check out the other mixes that have been done on this thread & cringe at the thought of mine.

Thanks to everyone involved in this experiment for putting up some quality tracks & performances.

Scott

I should point out, that when I said I used all the guitars, I didn't mean that they were all mixed together at the same time.... little bits of each one float in and out at various stages in the song!

But I do like your mix NL5 - good job!

I caught that the first time you said it, Bruce. This song makes the rest of my CD pale in comparison. :o

If I had the time, I'd submit the rest of my songs for a collab! :D

Anyone that wants the big zip has a day or two, then I will be pulling it down.....

Thanks. :D
