A complete drum mic setup?

I'm looking to get a complete drum mic setup. Believe me, I'd love to have a Beta 52, 3 Sm57s, and a couple CAD M179's for overhead, but I just don't have $500+ to shell out at the moment.
I was wondering what the esteemed collective minds of HR.com/bbs think of these mics?

I've heard the F-10s are good, but I don't know anything about the F-12's and F15's.

Yeah, they sound pretty decent. Are there any recordings where it picked up the toms?

I'm liking my 4-mic setup for drums:

*a pair of Oktava mc012's for overheads: I got a pir of them for $120 a couple weeks ago

*ATM25 for kick: about $135

*SM57 for snare: $79

These will run you about $300, and make a great combination IMHO.

Well,
I've done the 4-mic deal before, one for snare/hats, one for kick, and 2 for overhead, but the toms didn't show at all in the mix. So I need something for the toms.

Hmmm .. that's odd because my Oktava's pick up the toms very well. Of course, I place them a little differently than most people ... I have one mic sort of over the floor tom and pointing just a very little inward towards the snare and middle tom, and the other mic sort of over the "high" tom... if that makes any sense! :)

Yeah, that makes sense. I'll give that a whirl.

The illustrious ATM-25. I stopped at my favorite Guitar Center and attempted to have my pro audio guy order me one. It was then he informed me that Guitar Center no longer carries that model. Is AT discontinuing that model? Or is GC just not carrying it any longer? Either way, I think my drum mic configuration will be the folowing:

ATM25 Kick
beta 57a Snare
e604(3) Toms
MK-012 Overhead

This of course after hours of vigorus research in this very BBS. :P

what about

do u guys have any samples of drums recorded with only 2 mics?

I use ATM25 mics for the kick, floor, and rack toms. Very tasty mics, and still currently listed on the AT web site. I really doubt these are going away, as there isn't another AT product that competes with them.

The ATM25 is hypercardioid, compared to the AKG D112 cardioid pattern, so it is a bit more tightly focused. The disadvantage is the 180-degree rear sensitivity, but careful placement seems to handle that OK. I want to try a track of ATM25 on Marshall 4x12 cabs, just to see what the increased bass response sounds like in the recording.

The most interesting verdict I found in the wealth of data on this BBS points to the fact that the ATM25 sounds most like the actual drum. Which of course is our goal on the large scale no? Capture as close as we can the ACTUAL sound in the room thats being recorded ;)!!

the drums that were recorded with the audix mics sound REALLY boxy to me. i would go for the MK012, SM57, ATM25 plan...

You could always add SM57s for the toms.. they'd probably still sound better then the audix's

The SM57 rolls off below 200 Hz.. the ATM25 is good down to 30 Hz.

Oktava MC012 pair for overheads - $99

used Shure sm57 for snare and toms $60 X 3

used Peavey PVM520i for kick $70

$350
