"A Brother With Wings": Post HRC mix

Thanks a lot, fellas. Some thoughtful posts in there, like you guys were listening. Very cool. I appreciate it. This song will stand in very sharp contrast to the one I'm finishing up. Night and Day. Apples and Oranges.

Joro- Thanks a lot brotha. The acoustic mics are a pair of Octava MC012's. Oh and.... D-C/D on the verses. Ddim7-Bm/D-A#/D-D on the chorus. I'm glad you liked the bass tone. The bass is borrowed and it truly sucks. I literally rolled off...no... I cut off everything from 2K up because of the noise. But I do like what I ended up with for this tune. It doesn't need a lot of that string edge. Anyway, thanks a lot Joe.

Pedullist- hehe...I really haven't been working on this one. I'm almost finished another song. I've been putting off this mix while the ideas were flowing for the new one. I am very glad you dug this though. Again, very good to hear the bass sounds good....see my response to Joro about that. You might laugh. :) Thanks a ton Tjarko.

fprod south- It seems you and I share a lot of the same attitude toward music writing, creating. Just about every time you post a comment, it's thoughtful and agreeable on my end. And I already know we share some of the same musical inspiration. I'll repeat the offer- if you ever want some tracks, let me know. Thanks dude.

WATYF- Responded. :)

Toki- Yes, less is quite often more. I'm compelled to get up close and inside sometimes. Happy you liked it man...thanks.

TripleM-
I was also struck by how similar the mixed and unmixed versions seemed. I wonder if the difference is more pronounced on a nicer sound system.
I would say probably, BUT I really didn't do much to the original apart from cutting redundant frequencies, particularly in the low to low/mid range. Reverb is very subtle and I applied it over the entire mix- to each track that is, via aux bus. It's as close to natural as it gets still keeping a decent blend. Actually here are those settings if anyone else happens to be reading and is interested....

Room size: .50
Decay Time: .68 sec
High Rolloff: 3.84k
High Decay: 3.75k
Density: .50
Predelay: 45 ms
Motion Rate: .20
Motion Depth: 0
Mix: 13%

Anyway, thanks 3M! (And I knew you'd bust my balls about those harmonies :) )

christiaan- Thanks a lot man. Someone well known on this board once told me my "voice sucks, in a good way." Hopefully I'm learning to make the best of it. Thanks again!

Chris Harris-
It's funny, but it seems a LOT cleaner in terms of reverb/FX choices than your other stuff, but it's not missing anything at all.
Ya there really aren't any effects other than the bit of reverb I detailed to TripleM. The song just doesn't call for it like some of the bigger stuff I do. I'm glad you liked that harmony. I recorded it and smiled. I was like..."I CAN sing in tune!" haha. Thanks a lot Chris.

skids- damn, I really did leave the toilet seat up. Boy am I gonna get it. Thanks man.

Canopus- I don't know who Blur/David Byrne are. Hell, I don't know who over half of the people I get compared to are, but the cool thing about that is I get to learn about other artists that I might be able to relate to. Thank you very much for the listen.

Thanks again guys.

I downloaded both and I'll be on this tomorrow.. I was saving it for last but it got too late..

Sounds very good. The vocal presence is more consistent than the dry version.

Sounds great Tom!
Vocals are much better on this one.
You have such a fine voice,it dosn't need any help.

I liked the wide panned acoustics better on the other one though.
Go figure.:D

Really nice melody on this,haunting.

I just relized after all the time Iv'e been listening to you,who you remind me of.
Harry Chapin,but a site better.
He's one of my favorites.
(Hope that's not an insult!)

Another great tune,
Pete

Woulda thought you'd love David Byrne. Ah well :) I guess its something for the future then :D

I presume I'm spelling his name correct (hopefully) :)

I don't know ... David Byrne

Talking Heads...

I'll give the new version a listen tonight, Sluice. Looking forward to it - raw version was great.

i burned it to cd and listened in my car on the way to work today.
The listening environment is a 95 saturn sl2 LOL (my wife gets the good car)!

I like the acoustic guitar and the vocals. The acoustic sounds very unaltered and uncompressed to me. Nice work.

The vocals sound really good. You're using an SP into a DMP3 if I remember correctly, right?

The bass sounds like mud. But that might be the car, cause I popped in a couple other pro CD's and they also had a lack of definition down low. The only song that didn't do that was Crawdad's.

btw, apologies for taking so long to listen to your guitar track. i forgot to add it to this morning's cd (duh)! i'm also having second thoughts about submitting that song.

I listened to the mixed version first because I wanted to hear what it is before hearing what it was..

the first thing that caught me was the lyrics.. you know about my brother so I wont go into it, but I like them a lot.. That initself kept me from scrutinizing for flaws or preferences..

That's about all I can say about this one man.. Take it as a high compliment.. great piece..

Sam, I was hesitant to post the tune for fear of stirring something uncomfortable in you. I had actually written this remembering my father dealing with the death of his brother (drug overdose), and with my recent experience with my own brother in mind I guess I just had to document it all somehow.

You could probably tell the song is about letting go, so I hope it gave you more of a positive vibe than a negative one. Thanks bud.

Oh btw, I'm almost finished that heavy tune I was working on. Wrote some vocals etc. Might post it this weekend if this thread dies off. Hopefully you'll dig what I did with it. Let me know when you have time to do something together. I'll see what I've got for acoustic ideas to give ya. Now go write some tunes. :)

Doug H- Thanks for the ears and the observation.

muzeman- Hey Pete, thanks a lot man. I don't think I changed the panning on the acoustics at all. I might have, but I don't think so. Maybe with the EQ work it gives a different "stereo impression" (new term? :) ). Harry Chapman...another comparison I'm not familiar with. I'm like 80 million different artists in one. I'm starting to get a bit schizo...or was I already? Who said that?

dafduc- ahhh yes. Talking Heads. Of course I know them. But I sound like that guy? My dad would totally dig it if I did!

eric- thanks for the car test. Ya know, other people said the bass sounded good, so hopefully it's just that system. But I guess in reality it should be mixed to fit most systems right? I still have much to learn about bass. Which I hope to do when I get a something beside this Epiphone to work with. Oh, and it's SP to VTB-1 for the vocals. If I record a stereo vocal I'll put the Bheringer (gulp) B2 next to it. It almost looks silly, but it works sometimes. As for that guitar part, well either way I hope you enjoy at least some of it! Thanks again man.

Post that puppy! I can't wait to hear what you did with it after listening to it so many times myself.. I'll be in touch about collab stuff soon.. I have to work out some bugs in the new joint..

speaking of a joint, time for the the Friday mourning wake and bake!

d/l'd the other day,but just got a chance to listen. No mix advice,as it sounds pretty darn sweet to me.Just wanted to say what a nice piece of writing/performing it was!

Sorry for the bump, but I did it for two reasons:

-The clinic has been kinda slow lately... not much going on during the week

-People who might have not seen Pedullist's thread about the cover of your song might not have gotten to hear it. There :)

Slide action. I like the vocal sound here... warmer than usual for you, Tom. A lot more mid-range. Man, is this ever sweet...

So much emotion... I'm a man... but this is pulling at the glands in the corners of my eyes...

That's just the guitar playing doing the tear-jerking! Can't imagine what might happen if I actually paid attention to your lyric! :p :o :p

Is this the acoustic w/the messed up head?

Not alot of crits... nothing much at all to criticize... seriously. Even the mid-range "bump" in the frequencies sounded nice and warm... natural... and in no need of adjustments. Finger squeaks... but I'm on the non-nazi side of things when it comes to those :D

More amazing stuff. (Dloading "Blanket" and "Pizza" (or was it... "Fred"? Or... wait lemme check... Oh, it was "Perry"... ))

Hey man - Downloaded last night & listening at work on headphones.

I missed all of the dry recordings, so I didn’t listen to that version.

This sounds wonderful. I actually kind of like that you kept it low key compared to some of your other songs and didn’t really come in and drive it hard. I could hear a place for this in an album of yours as a bit of a change up.

OK…I heard one little thing a bit of an out of tune waver at 2:48 on the vocal. Not a huge deal, but it caught my ear.

You have a gift man…keep it up.

*edit*

heh...I didn't notice this was an old thead until just now reading some of the responses LOL

Well, since it's at the the top...

haha...thanks guys. I appreciate the new feedback. Haven't listened to the song in a while (except Pedullist's version), but I'll probably re-record a lot of it using my normal methods. This was done for the "dry" challenge so I couldn't use any compression. I don't like the sound of the guitars in this especially... If I remember, the guitar tracks picked up my CPU fan a lot on this, perhaps due to the lack of compression and signal to noise ratio blah blah blah...

Anyway, drop this thread and go check out something interesting.

(Oh, Jag, ya that's a bad note. I let it go for the challenge. I'll git 'er nix time! :) )

really good!

Loved it. Better than the first. Could you do me a favor and let me know what mic/pre was used on vocals? What pre was used for the guitar? Mic(s) distance/placement? Brand of Reverb? (thanks for those parameters by the way:) Type of guitar? (any other secrets to your beautiful recording/mixing/.... technique)

Im only asking these detail oriented questions because I've heard your other work and am extrememly impressed with it.

Please, when you have time, enlighten me.

Thanks so much

Andre

Thanks Bahris

I just got back from seeing the Blue Man Group, so I'm a bit tired. But here's a quick run-down...

Vocal...
Mic: Studio Projects C3
Pre: Studio Projects VTB-1
Why? Because they're very affordable.

Guitar: Seagull
Mics: Octava MC012's (pair)
One placed about 12 inches from the 12th fret facing the soundhole (closer when I use compression) and one placed about 14 inches in front of the soundhole.

Reverb is Cakewalk FX Reverb...comes with Cakewalk.

As for other secrets...that's kinda of a broad request. Patience is my big secret. And I don't remember if I had any before I started recording.

Alright I might be posting a new song for review this weekend, so please don't bump this thread. I do appreciate the feedback though! :)

SLuiCe,
I really like the feel of this song. It's a bit different from the others I've heard from you. Kinda reminded me of some old YES stuff in a way. Very well done.

EDIT: Sorry for the bump...I didn't read the post above until it was too late!
