It seems that this is the way to go (for many people, not everybody, of course).
I listened to you all, and bought a V67, and it made me thousands of dollars.
I'll take any advice about mics. I'll also be glad to send out samples of my work.

Or you could have tried.

That's what I did. That other didn't work.

Can you explain what you mean??

What is it that you do for work?

The topic is interesting, but very vauge.

Oh, I SEE!!!

I had to stare at the page for about 20 minutes, but now I see.

INSTEAD of buying a 960...and swapping the tube...

... you BUY a V67....

and make thousands of dollars!:)

I get it, I get it!

PURE GOLD! Thanks!!:D

is that it, phil? i couldn't tell.

i've made a few thousand dollars off my "home studio" as well. i don't think that qualifies me as a "pro" though.

and i DO have a V67. had it for several years. it's a completely different animal than the 960 (which sounds excellent with said mullard 4024, btw). i find the V67 sits in its case FAR more than it gets used.

but i suppose non-amateurs already know why you'd want more than one mic for vocals (or anything else, for that matter).

advice?

I think he is asking if anyone has a better idea than buying the 960 and swapping the tube. Isn't he?

BTW congrats CRINZ on the success with the V67. I like it a lot on some things.

Here's my interpretation.
The thread's title: A better idea than buying a MXL 960 and switching out the tube... followed by:
"It seems that this [buy 960 swap out tube] is the way to go (for many people, not everybody, of course).
I listened to you all [or all of you who recommended the v67], and bought a V67, and it made me thousands of dollars.
I'll take any advice about mics [assuming it's as good as the advice about the v67]." But here's where it gets a little ambiguous. "I'll also be glad to send out samples of my work [to those wishing to do business with me? for those who want to hear the v67 in action?]
This site is NOT just for amateurs... [because I'm a pro]."

of course, I'll have to take his word for it. I haven't made a dime.

Hmmm...

That's probably a fairly accurate assessment.

I wonder if the budget is assumed to be in the same price range?

I hear you Antichef - I'm quite sure my wife would pay me to stop making music - as it costs her more to let me buy gear and keep trying!!!

Hey...for whatever it's worth - I recorded my first few records on my own (meaning - as my own boss - in my own studio) doing everybody's vocals entirely with an MXL 990, because one was given to me, and I couldn't afford anything else at the time... In the studio where I first started as an engineer - all the mics were extremely high end, boutique-type stuff (telefunken, manley, etc.), so I had no real experience with cheap microphones. But my thought process at the time was "Everybody on HR says the V67 is ok...this is an MXL, too...."

The records were mostly demos and EPs for local artists. I, too, made "thousands of dollars" with that cheapo mic....and it's quite humorous to me now, thinking back about how careful all those vocalists were with it - they thought it was EX-SPAYN-SIVE!

It's not what you've got....it's how you use it! That's the best thing I've ever heard about recording....it's so true. Second best would be "Don't be a pussy with EQ!" -Steven Slate

(This is a weird, directionless thread anyway, so I just thought I'd chime in, too - as my experience is pretty relevant to some of the stuff the OP was saying....as for the rest of the stuff the OP was saying - I'm not sure I understand it, heh).

is this guy gonna respond to his very vague thread? I dont really get the point hes trying to get across...if it made him thousands and hes a "pro" why does he need advice...

confused, i am.

All i can say is that my MXL 960 with mullard CV 4024 runs circles around my V67.

there's no comparison AT ALL.

that's not to say that the V67's not usable, etc.....i'm on record time and again here trumpeting the "virtues" of the V67 for what it is......but......

cheers,
wade

It seems that this is the way to go (for many people, not everybody, of course).

Translation: In general, it seems like a lot of people recommend buying the mxl960 and swapping the tube, and find it a desirable mic. But some people like other mics, too. In other words, this affinity for the mxl tube mic is not by any means a Universally-held opinion.

I listened to you all, and bought a V67, and it made me thousands of dollars.

Translation: He's asked about other mics (on Homerecording.com) in the past, and has gotten good results. For example: the mxlv67 was recommended to him, and it worked out. Some of the work he's done with it has even netted him a little extra dough (I'm assuming wedding receptions? Batmitzfas? Winning from Star Search competition?)

I'll take any advice about mics.

Translation: I'm looking for advice on another mic now. (I'm guessing he wants opinions on the mxl960, and whether someone else has any other ideas)

I'll also be glad to send out samples of my work.

Translation: In case you want to hear what my voice sounds like, I have samples. Unfortunately, my skills in posting links to download samples are about as developed as my grasp of the English language. :D Therefore, I'm going to have to send you copies snailmail if you'd like. Just so that you can recommend me a mic.

This site is NOT just for amateurs...

Translation: Thanks. You guys are the best!

That just about solves the mystery, doesn't it. Thanks PhilGood

I guess I've kinda made an ass of myself from this post.
My point was, that advice I've gotten from from here was really good, and it helped me professionally.
Yes, I do have examples of my work, and I'd LOVE to show it to anyone interested.
