Just wondering if he's pounding it out a bit hard or if this is normal fare for an up and coming drummer.

Hey man, that's normal for a young inspiring rocker. I used to break sticks every practice, along with cymbals and heads. Then I heard this word 'dynamics' later on and it changed my approach.

I'd think if he learns how to do a rimshot on the snare that'll save the head from some torture, but the sticks will start dissipating a little faster. I'd let him go on his own track if he's learning and good at what he does.

If you can't beat the hell out of a snare drum there's no sense in playing rock drums.

It's the style. It's also a great tension reliever. Has he been more laidback than before he was drumming?

Tighten the head up.

Excellent points guys. A teenager with angst. You mentioned going through sticks! OMG! Oh he's all over that. It looks like a lumber mill down there. He seems to move between Vic Firths and Travis barkers. The wood tips don't last long but he prefers them. When they're all hacked, then it's to the nylon tipps. Taste and style will come with maturity I hope. He's got a lesson on Wednesday. I'll visit with the teach.

It is entirely possible to be loud and still have the head last for more than a week or so. I just changed the head on my snare, and that was the same head that was on it at JamFest. It had been on the drum for at least 2 months before that.

I agree. I beat the hell out of my snare and rarely change it. Seems like its something other than hitting it that is ruining it.

I used to break sticks all the time like that. Then I saw a Buddy Rich video and I was like... okay, what's this, playing quieter than earsplitting? Woah, cool. But yeah. Try getting a thicker head? Remo makes some really thick heads for hard-hitters. Also tighten it up, the dents and such might just be because it's too loose?
