Doing research at the moment cause of funds.

I like the OCTROpre and digimax but i really don't need optical ADAT out. I just want 8 channels for now. For my drum set.

What i found

Yamaha MLA7 - 8 channel $500.
SM Pro Audio - 8 Channel $200.

I'm leading toward the Yamaha MLA7 because it is probably a better unit. Don't want to spend more then $500.

Anyone had experience with the MLA7?

I have, and its reccmended for 8 input stuff. good clear with lots of gain like an 8 channel dmp3. good in combination with a behriger 8 channel tube sweetner . It allows me to utilize all my input on my DPS16. outputs are unballanced so theres not any loss in the conversion between the unit and the recorder.

I wonder if anyone else here uses one?

The hoontech (sta) unit I dont know about though.

thanks for the info, its going in to my DIGI001 box. which are just line level. So I hope i can use this for drums and it would work better.

Studio Projects is coming out with an 8ch pre pretty soon and if it gets as good a reviews as their VTB1 it should be pretty sweet.

You are lucky to get the Yamaha for 500 it was 1200.00 a while back. but there are choices abound for any 8 channel unit.

I'd recommend just getting an 8-12 channel mixer with inserts.

I dont know about carvin boards, they look good but i havent used any. The soundcraft M series should be the best value for that them maybe the mackie. Ive never been a fan of pres that came on a board I could afford.

Seriously - check out the Mackie 1604 VLZ pro mixer.

You can find it used for about your budget. Gives you 16 pretty darn good preamps (Mackie XLR). The first 8 channels have direct outs, and you can easily route the next 6 channels to the 6 aux sends, and last 2 to the mains -- ending up with 16 channels of pres.

Of course, you have to put up with the fact that you have all the extra functionality of a mixer, if you ever want it.

It can be mounted in a rack, too.

if you're using a digi 001 i'd really consider the digimax or maybe the octopre.

Yeah it's a little more to go with lightpipe out, but it allows you to bypass the digi001 d/a converters.

I used to think the digi converters were fine, not really knowing the difference.

using the digimax has a TOTALLY noticable affect on the sound, especially when you start layering tracks.
